thane  has  very  few  material  possessions,  and  the  reality  is  that  the  ones  he  does  possess  are  not  of  some  grand  importance.  there  is  a  danger  to  being  sentimental  that  can’t  be  understated,  and  thane’s  learned  that  particular  lesson  one  too  many  times.  still,  upon  the  realization  he’s  missing  a  bottle  of  batarian  brandy  he’d  bought  on  the  citadel  no  more  than  a  week  ago  (  just  to  try  it,  he’d  told  himself  ),  the  question  begins  to  tug  at  his  sleeve:  what  could  he  have  possibly  done  with  it?

“  i take exception to impugning my professionalism.  ”

THERE   ARE   A   LOT   OF   BIG   WORDS      in   that   sentence,   but   shepard   is   fairly   certain   that’s   not   what   she’d   been   doing,      and   she   turns   a   look   on   the   thief   that’s   equal   parts   question   and   confusion.      kasumi   had   pointed   out   from   the   start   that   she’s   not   the   most   famous   at   what   she   does   for   a   reason.      can’t   stay   under   the   radar   that   way   without   keeping   it   professional.

           ❝      i   wouldn’t   dream   of   implying   that   you   were   anything   else.      ❞         a   shrug,      and   shepard   turns   back   to   the   console   in   front   of   her.         ❝      wasn’t   trying   to   offend,      just   saying      ---      ❞      and   now   that   it’s   been   called   into   question,      she’s   not   sure   how   to   reword   it   to   sound   anything   but.      she   shakes   her   head.      ❝      ---      never      mind.         ❞         a   pause,      and   then   she   looks   up   again.         ❝      i’ve   been   thinking   about   what   you   said,      back   at   the   collector   base.      ❞         

turning,      shepard   leans   against   the   console,      arms   crossing.         ❝      we   didn’t   give   the   illusive   man   anything,      and   he   still   started   experimenting   on   his   own   people      ---      ❞         this   keeps   her   up   at   night,      wondering   what   she   could   have   done   better.         ❝      ---      sometimes   i   wonder,      you   know;      what’s   the   point   in   doing   the   right   thing,      if   shit   like   this   happens   anyway.      ❞
