The Pygmalion effect is a phenomenon in which the greater the expectation placed on a person, the better they perform. It is named for the play by George Bernard Shaw. Its corollary is the golem effect, in which low expectations lead to a decrease in performance. There is also a secretary in Hong Kong named Pygmalion. :D
