yes! guided! she controls her life in specific ways; she wasn't the "lost girl" looking for meaning-- she creates her own idea of what it means to travel with the doctor (in 'bells' she sets boundaries very clearly). like you said, she has been practicing this for a long time-- since childhood. she's ambitious & likes to push her limits, but whether or not she is able to maintain that control is the question. i think it will become clear and/or fall apart as the series comes to a close!
Agreed. If I could have my wish, going from what we know by this point, I'd basically like her to fuck up majorly. Do something that's genuinely terrible, because she thinks it's necessary (essentially betraying the spirit of what a New Who companion is). And then don't just stop but give her a redemption arc.But we'll see, maybe they come up with something better.

yes, i totally agree with you that she's not the first to mirror the doctor in less-than-positive ways! in many ways, all his companions have brought out positive and negative qualities in him (sometimes to extremes). clara, in my opinion, just seems the most sure of herself and her power, and like you said, that mirrors the doctor in a very new way. thanks for responding to all of this by the way, lovely to chat-- i love your analyses :) x
I think in Clara's case, it's just that the whole thing seems so guided by her own personality and world view. She already walked into this arrangement with an idea of what a hero should be like and being rather adept at projecting that image. "The Rings of Akhaten", in retrospect, is already a well-rounded presentation of that part - the compassion, the fear, the determination, the using her emotions for good... but also the setting of boundaries.
As Caitlin pointed out beautifully, it is really "just" the kind of hero she is and wants to be that is changing, whether it's deliberate or subconscious. So in some ways, of course she'd seem sure of herself there. Because she's been practicing for a very long time.
(This is a lovely discussion. I must apologise for shifting the topic a bit each time, though, I just sort of take your thoughts and see where reflection leads me, whether that's close or rather far away.)
yes, i should have used a different word. manipulating not as in tricking, but as in influencing, driving him. he can love it too, but their power dynamic is very unique. she's just one of the first companions who has mirrored the "un-hero-ness" of the doctor as opposed to being the human foil who brings him back to earth. she's not a bad person, on the contrary, she's lovely. but she's addicted to the game she's playing, & truly believes she can win. i think eventually she'll have to reassess.
I love how they turned the “the companion is the Doctor’s conscience” around. As much as I like it when companions confront the Doctor and stand up for what they think is right, it’s not really a favourite approach of mine. I mean, there can be little doubt that the Doctor needs someone to stop him occasionally, needs another - better perspective - but as a summing up of the Doctor/companion relationship, it’s just too perfunctory in nature, for my taste. In some ways I prefered what the Doctor told Amy, that he’s seeing the wonders of the universe through their eyes. But of course that once again points to a function… they’re his friends. That is what should matter above all else.
I don’t think she’s the first companion to mirror the Doctor in not entirely positive ways. Rose grew a lot in series 2 and I've seen the (appreciative) argument made that her becoming more like the Doctor wasn't exclusively portrayed in a positive light. When Martha literally became a doctor keeping the earth safe from alien threats, she almost became the one to destroy the planet with the Osterhagen key. So it's not an entirely unique approach, but it's obviously done in a different way and I love it.
Doctor: "It's a scanner. I'm scanning. Why do I keep you around?" Clara: "Because the alternative would be developing a conscience of your own."
I've been mainly focusing on Clara's perspective here, but yes, it's definitely revealing something about the Doctor and furthering the exploration of his characterisation. Ironically, he's almost becoming... better.
In the self-loating, in the realisation that he might turn Clara into something worse (whether he actually is or not), there is this moment when he embraces being the Doctor. And not just the Doctor is the one who fights the monsters dimensions, but also the "never cruel or cowardly". He believes in the good nature of what they are encountering, he tries to communicate with them in any way he can... and only then does he reluctantly take on the "role" he has to play.
It's just a fascinating dynamic and I can't wait for what they'll do with it.
really interested in your last post. i also see clara as a free agent; i actually find that she's almost manipulating the doctor more than he's "turning her into a weapon" (i don't see that at all tbh). i love her & i think she's one of the more intense/scarier companions we've had. she's completely changed the companion/doctor dynamic. it's fascinating & brilliant (but selfishly i'm not sure i really LIKE it). anyway, i love reading your thoughts, i wish tumblr had more dw fandom discussion x
(Thank you! I think my last post was this one, right? I think tumblr has plenty of dw fandom discussions, there's a lot of meta being written... and a lot of arguments taking place. It's a rich environment if you know where to look.)
I've got to admit, I don't quite see the manipulation angle. Except maybe the lies she is telling, to keep up the appearance of everything being fine. But he's catching on there... and he's not willing to give this up anymore than she is, he's just suddenly the more honest person in this friendship.
I never thought I'd see the day where it would be feasible to call Clara "one of the more intense/scarier companions we've had". But you are right. In a way, she even transcends River Song here. River might have almost destroyed the universe once and can make a Dalek beg for mercy, but she also became more compassionate, less destructive, less impulsive, as she developed and grew. She did not start out as Clara Oswald, who wanted to be caring and heroic and responsible and good. There is an underlying uncertainty of just what Clara can be capable of in time which in its own way is more unsettling than "used to be a super assassin".
