Here’s the thing – Strelitzia is umbelievably bad when it comes to children. They’re small, weak – awkward in their movements. Fragile, and she couldn’t blame them.ᴛʜɪꜱ ᴡᴀꜱɴ’ᴛ ᴀ ᴘᴏᴋᴇᴍᴏɴ, ɪᴛ ᴡᴀꜱɴ’ᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ꜱᴀᴍᴇ.

So the second Zam approaches her, tears and snot alike rushing down his face, as he clinges himself to her leg – and she stares at Rich, panickedly, eyes wide, totally asking for help. 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘩𝘦 – 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙡𝙚𝙜 ?? That’s gonna get him away, right ?

“ Uh … … … ” Uh. “ I eh … ‘M still a trainer, buddy … Got 𝕘𝕪𝕞 𝕝𝕖𝕒𝕕𝕖𝕣𝕤’ 𝕒𝕤𝕤 t’ kick, yeah ? ”

IT FEELS LIKE A TRICK, LIKE A DREAM --------- he almost feels like a GHOST from another time, another life. ( she’s well - versed in the ways of ghosts; they follow her, cling to her like a shadow she just can’t shake. ) and she wants to catch his hand before he can pull it back, to hold him there, but she hesitates instead ------- an unnatural state for her to find herself in. for all the CONVICTION she usually carries, for all the CONFIDENCE ----------- there is now nothing but a REAL FEAR that if she reaches out to TOUCH him he’ll simply fall away into nothing but plumes of SMOKE between her fingertips.

and even with the fear she lets him finish his task, lets him carry on pushing back a section of hair and tucking it neatly behind the curve of her ear ------- feeling the WARMTH OF SKIN where she wasn’t sure she would. 

( not a trick, not a dream, not a ghost. )

   “you make me WAIT TOO LONG, richard rider.” the beginnings of a smile curl around the corner of her mouth as his fingers curl around her ear ------- he’ll recognize it; it’s one she’s always reserved for HIM alone. ( one that’s rusty from disuse. )
