"Why don't you introduce yourself to the class?"
This is so stupid, Imogen thought. She didn't understand why all of her teachers thus far had felt compelled to make her stand up at the front of the room and introduce herself. It hadn't been fun in first hour, and it certainly hadn't gotten any better as time passed. It was third hour now, and the exercise had become more tedious than anything else. "Imogen" she said, voice almost bored as she gazed out at the class before her, looking at no one in particular.
She knew that how she introduced herself would impact how people saw her and therefore whether the inevitable gossip about her was good or bad, but beyond making sure she didn't mumble or make herself look like a particularly easy target, she couldn't quite bring herself to care. Sure, this was exactly the kind of school she'd longed to go to for years now, but the reasons behind the transfer more than negated any positive emotions associated with it.
"Welcome, Imogen. There's a free space next to Eli, why don't you take a seat?" the teacher encouraged, causing Imogen to have to force herself not to roll her eyes. There was only one empty seat in the room, so there really wasn't any need for the teacher to mention the name of the student it was beside, save for a lame attempt at getting an introduction out of the way for her. She meandered in the direction of the empty desk she'd seen when everyone had filed in, eyes widening when she caught sight of the dark haired boy beside it.
He'd hadn't been facing the front when she'd first looked around so she hadn't noticed, but now... She froze for a split second, staring. It seemed impossible, but this wasn't just someone who happened to share the name, this was her Eli. After a moment that simultaneously felt like an instant and a lifetime she snapped out of it, at least enough to get her feet moving again. She sat down in the seat she'd been assigned, but rather than shifting her attention to the front, she turned her head to keep looking at the boy beside her, the beginning of her first smile in weeks beginning to work its way across her face.
