On a Hermes and Odin Connection
Something I learned a few months ago, about the Germanic Woden and how he was dubbed Mercury by the Romans (Iâll have to source this later, itâs late) and it kind of nibbled around in the back of my mind for a while. It connected with ideas Iâve had about other things so I just kinda hung on to it.
Then, earlier this week I had a SUPER connected entire day with Odin. Lots of good conversations, lots of good stuff shared to other devotees of Odin, good times all around. And I got to thinking about Odin as an intercessor. I wasnât always talking to him about a thing, sometimes I was using the strong connection with him to contact Freya, or Loki, etc. Then I thought, what if there are other deities who can act in this way with their pantheon? What if I could contact them, respectfully of course, so that I can better divine information for their devotees, as I had done with Odin.
I began looking into liminal deities, thatâ s specifically what I was vibing towards, and Hermes came up connected to crossroads, to travel, to passing between life and death, to magic, and prophecy⌠interestingly all similar things to Odinâs âstuffâ
Then yesterday I got the Wildwood Tarot deck, some of the cards were just calling to me so I got the app to try it out. I did an interview with it and got some inteeeeense Dionysus vibes. He was all over the cards. Tonight, I went to talk to Dionysus just to see whatâs up. Eventually it came around that he was just getting my attention for Hermes. Oh.
So we had a brief chat, Hermes and I. He seems interested in communicating together, as long as I keep things balanced (his words)Â between Norse and Hellenic things, so to speak. (which I need to figure out exactly what that means)
ANYWAY, eventually making my way around to The Point: when I was looking up symbols of Hermes, I came across this link which says:
IDENTIFIED WITH NON-GREEK GODS: Mercurius (Roman god); Thoth (Egyptian god); Anubis (Egyptian god); Woden-Odin (Germanic god)
Now, Iâm wondering, just how much connection is there between Hermes and Odin? Historically? I donât really need the information to further anything, itâs just sort of bugging me now.
Odin as Intercessor
Several times this week, Iâve been able to use Odin as an intercessor between me and other entities, on my own behalf and when petitioning for others. And it has worked SO well. It is a role he (for now) seems to enjoy. I get a feeling of him liking the attention and importance of being a necessary go-between. But part of me is like, âthis is a thing from Odin? Odin as negotiator and mediator?â Admittedly, itâs a little strange to me. But then, he also is a golden tongued speaker, something he and Loki have in common, so being charming is probably a bit of a fun thing I suppose.
Okay, so, this is leading to a thought of seeking out other deities to act as intercessors, but outside the Norse pantheon. I feel like it would be rude to ask Odin to mediate between me and another pantheon, so I havenât really asked*. But as I am working on my skills as a medium (I guess youâd call it that, alternately godphone**) and interacting with a variety of pagans on Tumblr, Iâd like to be able to communicate respectfully with other pantheons. My readings are so much clearer for people when I can petition a spirit or deity specifically***, and Iâd like to continue that.
So the thought is, which deities might one reach out to do such a thing? Any ideas? Or thoughts on this position as it stands?
*There is one exception to this, he helped me connect with a deity who currently has no pantheon connections, and it *did* go well, but I think because Odin seemed to admire this entity very much. But anyway. **I must admit, I donât like the term godphone. I get the principle entirely, and no disparaging (obviously) on the task, just the word seems flippant and diminutive. Havenât thought of a better option though. Medium doesnât feel right as I think most people have that association with the dead/ghosts wht have you.
***I have zero connection with angelic or demonic beings, it just isnât there. And I donât really have a good connection at all with the dead for ancestor work. Itâs very tenuous at best.
