Yes. Simply for the fact that God commanded him to. I’d like to think if God spoke to me and I knew it to be Him I’d do as I was told.

God doesn’t give commands. God opens possibilities, some of which are violent and awful– but the choice is ours. Abe could have said no.

My questions:

1. Do you like to fall asleep warm or cold? I’d definitely rather be cold and cover up with lots of blankets than be hot and miserable.

2. Cats or Dogs? Cats, of course.

3. Have you ever watched When Harry Met Sally? If not, why? Yes, I have. :)

4. Best movie theater snack? Anything but popcorn … But, seriously, cookie dough bites, Junior Mints, or Reece’s Pieces.

5. Tea: sweet or unsweetened? Sweetened, but not syrupy sweet.

6. Favorite kinds of gifts? Books. Movies. Games. Music.

7. Do you see yourself living in the same city 10 years down the road? Not necessarily. It depends on where life leads.

8. Do you get along with your parents? Pretty well. We have a closer relationship than most families, I’d say.

9. Favorite hobby? Does listening to music count as a hobby? If not, I’ll have to go with reading.

10. What kind of books do you like to read? Sci-fi/fantasy, theology, biography, horror, YA

11. Favorite meal? I’m a big fan of Italian food … and sushi.

1. With what religion/denomination do you most identify (if any)?

2. How significantly do your beliefs—theological, political, philosophical, etc.—differ from your family and the people with whom you spend the most time? If they’re significantly different, are you able to maintain those relationships, and how?

3. What is your opinion of house churches and other non-traditional churches (faith communities that meet in coffeeshops or pubs, for example)?

4. What artists (musicians, bands, authors, or otherwise) have influenced you the most?

7. If you had to go the rest of your life without either coffee or tea, which would you choose?

10. If you drink coffee, how do you prefer it? Black/cream? Sweet/unsweet? If you don’t drink coffee, there’s no time like the present to start. ;)

Most surprising thing? Gosh, I don’t know. I haven’t really had any big surprising moments since I got out of seminary. Mostly, I’ve been surprised by how overwhelming it all is—though to be fair, a lot of that has to do with me dealing with anxiety and depression.

What keeps me going as a pastor… a sense of humor. Sometimes a bitter, sarcastic, awful sense of humor, but still, you’ve got to be able to laugh at things. Definitely the sense of call is necessary to keep going. Support systems (friends, husband, therapist). I take a lot of comfort from different biblical characters—Jacob, Elijah, Jonah, Esther—particularly because being called by God can be so frustrating and miserable sometimes, but they got through it. I’m also a big fan of the worldview of Qohelet (Ecclesiastes), which is basically “Things should be just and fair and reasonable, but they aren’t, and that sucks.”

Science undergrad, huh? I didn’t expect that!
