Don't lie or put yourself in a position where you feel the need to do so. I feel like issues revolving around honesty are a constant, in our lives. So why constantly be over-complicating and making things difficult for yourself?

Just ask yourself:

"Would I be able to look x straight in the eyes and tell them of my actions without feeling the need to lie?".

Use one person who you believe is one of, if not the most important persons in your life to represent X. Let that be your guide and you'll rarely complicate things.
