Side quest over the next few weeks: find a few of these gorgeous tiny micaria adults (juveniles are a little less colorful, shot #3) to send off to Marc Milne for a proper identification! For now, we're referring to them as Galaxy Spoods, for reasons you can surely deduce. 🌌
immediately recognizable as a herpylline gnaphosid but otherwise a little weird looking, Poecilochroa albomaculata is a charming little critter endemic to southwestern europe and possibly northern africa. the illusion of the smiley face on the abdomen is enhanced by the family's trademark large spinnerets, giving it a stupid little tuft of hair, although personally my favorite feature is that high-contrast prosoma found in a lot of its relatives

I think it might be a Red-headed mouse spider, but I'm not totally sure. Could you help identify it?
The location and size are what makes me most sceptical of it being one. It was found in a classroom in Melbourne, Florida, and very small (around 12 millimeters I think?)
Hello! It is definitely not a red-headed mouse spider - that's only found in Australia. Location is a super important part of IDing and it's why I always ask for a location for submissions. Your friend is a ground spider in the family Gnophosidae, probably Gnaphosa sericata, which as far as I know, has no common name.

Unremarkable ground spiders, first described by Baltic-German arachnologist Eugen von Keyserling in 1891. Keyserling was the author of Die Spinnen Amerikas, and completed Die Arachniden Australiens for German arachnologist Ludwig Carl Christian Koch after he went blind.
As of last year, there's 28 species in the genus, mostly found on southern continents. Barring Antarctica, of course - there's no way these things could take down a penguin.

A local gnaphosidae species. Unfortunately not very common in captivity, so I intend on providing more information on their captive care. They are very active and fast, but seem unable to climb plastic. This girl has been voraciously hunting the fruit flies I've given her so far, and in the wild I've seen them catch fairly large prey for their size.
