Data migration has entered Arizona! Macoun's rabbit-tobacco or cudweed is a widely distributed plant that has a pleasant smell. Like its name suggests, it's a favorite of rabbits and has been used as a tobacco alternative. This specimen was found at Rustler Park Recreation Area in the Chiricahua Mountains of Arizona. The park overlooks Sulphur Spring Valley and areas of New Mexico. ____ UTEP 19828 Collector: Richard D. #2576 - Pseudognaphalium lanatum
There are at least two plants in New Zealand that have been referred to as Pseudognaphalium luteoalbum, the introduced Jersey Cudweed. In 2022 Smissen et al. revived Gnaphalium lanatum for the very similar native.
The new species probably includes the plants previously described as P. ephemerum but this isn't certain yet, and P. lanatum is still waiting on a proper description. P. ephemerum is seriously threatened by invasive weeds in some of its ephemeral wetland habitats.
