Glowpunk (as a genre?)
Ok since I’ve had some people over on the discords ask me about glowpunk and what it is I’ve decided to type up some kind of definition/explanation post type thing.
1. Glowpunk is Hopepunk. Meaning it’s all about fighting for the world to be a better place, about caring for other people, that things might suck now but damn it we’re gonna bring the world kicking and screaming into a better future.
2. It is diverse. It intersectional and accessible. It includes everyone. Glowpunk is about a better future for everyone. Glowpunk includes religious minorities, people of color, queer characters, and the disabled. It doesn’t exclude the groups who are fighting the hardest, who have been erased, who have been the first casualties in fiction and real life.
It doesn’t bury your gays, erase your disabled, or uphold any tropes that lead to the death, demonization, or discrimination of minority and marginalized groups. It doesn’t ration humanity.
It doesn’t kill characters for the sake of furthering others’ arcs, for teaching other people that people die. It doesn’t have “everyone dies” or “anyone can die”. It doesn’t buy into the idea that a tragic ending is more “artistic” and “deep” or “realistic” than a happy one.
Glowpunk teaches us we can live. That everyone can live. Because the world doesn’t have to be bad. That everyone can have a happy ending.
3. The light at the end of the tunnel isn’t the only light. The world isn’t completely dark. It is bright and hopeful if people know where to look. This is also reflected in the aesthetic. Bioluminescence, magic, technology, whatever. If you think it should glow, let it glow.
4. Glowpunk is about life. In every shape and form. It is about finding hope and a better future and including everyone in it.
glowpunk is basically hopepunk but there’s a shit ton of bioluminescence and everything glows
Glowpunk is about the aesthetic (glowing shit) and hope (cuz we've got not just a light at the end of the tunnel but lights lining your way so you're never in the dark)
