I want to ramble about GK!Gaster's perspective on his older son.
In many ways, Amber IS the perfect child his father wanted, and that frustrated him. His child, diligent, eager to please others, readily adapting to survival on little support. Able to carry on, even when he is terrified. He had a roof over his head provided for him, and his food was paid for.
Yes... His father envied him. He lacked the same physical comforts in his upbringing during the monster-human war, and to this day he could not grow past his own cowardice. Somewhere, he knew he was being cruel to his son, but he could always explain it to himself why-
"The world is cruel, he needs to toughen up."
But the real reasons go much deeper than that. Aware of his own neglect towards him, but unwilling to change his ways because he could not admit it to himself, the bitter taste of his own unjust behaviour would further poison his thoughts. The envy he felt towards his own child who he saw as objectively better than himself (and oh, how it hurts the pride of this shame-filled person when a child is better than them!), and the frustration he felt with himself for his own actions and negligence would be redirected towards the cause of these feelings- his own child.
Contempt. Resentment.
Amber was living proof of everything he could not become, and he could not forgive him for it.
In a weird irony, he considers Alphys to be something of a niece or an apprentice, if not almost a daughter. Perhaps he is more tolerant of this child because she is directly useful to him, and because he has no direct obligations towards her like parenting, the neglecting of which invokes feelings of guilt. And he does not like feeling bad things, so he does not like the source of such things. he likes the idea of being an important hero for monsterkind.

Human attacks have been occurring for decades. The barrier is made of storms, which is dangerous to humans as well, so humans cast a magic to freeze it temporarily.
The world monsters have known is one in which a human attack might occur at any moment- or there may be years of peace from them. The cruel winds stop only to announce the arrival of an even greater calamity.
Monster souls are stored inside gemstones they wear on their person, and these attackers are after these beautifully polished jewels. The residual magic gives these gems a lovely glow far beyond the existence of the monster it belonged to.
Gaster became especially busy after becoming advisor to the new King. Or maybe he is just looking for excuses to be away from his sons, feel guilty about neglecting them, and because they are his source of guilty conscience, avoid them some more.
Are the others, like undye or sans for example are in this AU?
Yeah! I only have refs for a few of them, but the main cast are Papyrus, Sans, Undyne, Alphys, Muffet, Asriel and Gaster. Toriel and Asgore have been killed by humans who attacked, leaving the young prince to become king in their place. I will post about Sans and Alphys when i make refs for them!
There is also a Grillby who is a blacksmith.
Undyne protects Waterfall. She's loud and passionate, and has a soft spot for nerds who do questionable science.
Gaster is his own worst enemy, he actively sabotages himself because of doubt, and abandoned his kids when they were young because he didn't think he could protect them so he didn't even try.
Asriel doesn't like to engage in combat but wants to be a good king for his people and promised to them that he would help them see the stars one day. Chara had good intentions but severely overestimated the foolproofness of their plans and ended up losing their life.
