Sam couldn't help but smile as he sat down at the piano bench, his heart racing as images of long, red hair and a bright blue box danced in his mind. His fingers slowly rested on the white keys coated with dust and he could feel her warm soft hands, small compared to his, he turned, expecting to see bright green eyes and a smile that out shown everything he knew. Instead he found himself not at a piano bench, but in what seemed like a hospital. Where was he? Where was Amelia? Where was The Doctor? His heart pounded, echoing in his ears. He tried to remember. Why couldn't he remember. Why was he here? Amy...he had to remember. He heard a menacing laugh next to him, a voice that was the equivalent to nails on a chalkboard “you'll never see her again” Sam heard someone, Lucifer, sneer… That wasn't real, right? No. No. Amy was real...not this...
Let's burn our dreams into the skyline and tattoo our sweat tears forever you and I.
Screaming. That was the first thing Amy heard when she got out of the TARDIS. Someone needed help. Without hesitation, she ran towards the noise, the footsteps echoing behind her indicated the Doctor was following. The first thing she noticed when they found a campsite was the two hot men, Americans, she assumed since that is where the Doctor had said they were. One was reading and the other seemed to be consoling a woman and a young man. The one reading looked up, confusion becoming apparent on his face.
“Doctor? Amy? What are you doing here?” He asked, the other man sat up straight.
“Sam... do you know these people?” He asked, caution clear in his voice, but there was something else. A look Amy had often seen on her fiance’s face, something of concern and worry, as if only wanting to protect the other. The brief moment of panic about getting married the next morning had distracted her, when she came back into the conversation The Doctor was already trying to figure out what was going on, talking to Sam and the other man, she only reengaged because she heard the word ‘wendigo’, and that didn’t sound like a normal thing.
“Can I talk to you for a moment?” She blurted while the other was talking. Sam chuckled, a beautiful smile spread across his lips that made his shining eyes a lot brighter. She could see Dean wanting to be offended by the interruption, but something wasn’t letting him, there was that same concerned look again. Dismissing it, she followed Sam. He lead Amy to the other side of a circle that was drawn in the dirt, “Those symbols…”
“Not satanic,” Sam finished for her, “It’s protection, from the wendigo.”
Amy nodded slowly, “So… how do you know me?” She asked, crossing her arms over her stomach and staring at the beautiful man in front of her, who seemed to be God’s most perfect creation.
Sam smiled, “My past, your future… I think that’s about all I can tell you, uh, according to The Doctor, at least,” He said, playing with the cover of the book he had been reading.
“Hmm… are we… close?” Amy asked, taking a step leisurely towards him. She wasn’t too sure, since it was night and the fire was emitting a warm orange glow over all of them, but she thought she saw him blush.
“We’re friends…” He replied casually. Amy nodded, noticing the way he said “friends” with hesitation. So, obviously more than that. So, she didn’t get married tomorrow and she could figure out something with the beautiful man in front of her.
“Hmm, alright, so what are we going to do now?” She asked, addressing the other man who had lingered over to where she and Sam were talking.
“Well, wendigos are amazing hunters, more so in the night-” Sam started, getting interrupted by the other man.
“I already explained that,” His companion stated.
“Yeah, but you were boring Amy,” Sam replied, causing Amy to smile.
“You do know me well,” She mused, sure he was blushing this time.
Sam finished explaining why they were just going to stay put and that the Doctor and Amy could leave in the morning. Great, morning. She decided to forget that for now, and instead decided to get to know Sam. Maybe she couldn’t have him. Maybe she would get married the next morning and forget about the tall American with the multi-colored eyes and beautiful smile. But for now, under the starlight, she would enjoy this fantasy.
Hold your breath 'til we cause the sundown
“So where are we going?” Amy asked, watching as the Doctor pranced around the TARDIS console.
“Arcadia,” He replied simply, focused on flipping switches.
“Can I ask you a favor?” Amy asked sweetly, just as the Doctor was about to speak again, presumably to rant about this ‘Arcadia’ place. That was not what Amy cared about.Placing a hand on the console and shifting her weight onto it and her right foot, adding a head tilt and a small smile, in hopes of being more convincing, she spoke again “I’ve been thinking about Sam, you know, the guy we met before we saved the space whale?” The doctor nodded, now looking up at her as she continued to speak, “What if we go visit him? We could take him to Arcadia!” She said excitedly, straightening up.
The Doctor cleared his throat. “Sam Winchester? Amy…” He shook his head.
“What? You said he seemed like a good man. He was just trying to help that lady-” Amy stopped when she saw the worried look on the Doctor’s face.
“Amy, he is a good man.He and his brother…” He sighed. “Certain points in time are fixed, they can’t change, you can’t make a different outcome... Samuel Winchester’s fate is a fixed point… a very dark point, something he has to do alone.”
Amy nodded slowly, remembering the night they had met. He seemed like such an amazing guy, like someone whom she could settle down with, someone whom wouldn’t be intimidated by her. She also remembered thinking he was a fantasy. She couldn’t remember why, it was something that had been nagging at her for a while now, something she knew she was supposed to remember but couldn’t.
“I don’t want you to become attached and then have to say goodbye,” the Doctor finished, looking at her carefully.
“I won’t. Promise. But we do kind of owe him,” Amy replied, reminding herself that those beautiful lips were just a fantasy.
The Doctor sighed and pulled a lever. The TARDIS shook, causing them to lose their balance. Amy ran to open the door, only to find herself in what looked like a hotel.
“I thought we were going to-” She was cut off by someone entering the motel room. A smile spread across her face when she saw who it was, “Sam!”
Sam smiled back and walked over, pulling her into a hug and spinning her around. “Amy! It’s been a while.” he seemed to have gotten taller, stronger, hotter...God this was a terrible idea. How was she supposed to not get attached to such a beautiful smile?
“Pack a bag, we’re going to Arcadia” Amy said
“It’s a planet” The Doctor explained, seeing Sam’s confused look “and you won't be need your bag. Come along” he said, disappearing into the TARDIS.
Amy shared a smile with Sam before going in as well.
This is the moment Time is racing, slow it down
Amy couldn't help but smile as she looked around. All the paintings surrounding her looked stunning, each colorful and vibrant. “Ooo! There” she said, pointing to a piece by Vincent Van Gogh. The Doctor followed, noticing something wrong with the painting. He swiftly gathered information from the guide talking to a group of people and rushed to the TARDIS, Amy close behind.
“Can we go get Sam?” Amy asked, watching him as he started to prance and spin around the TARDIS console
“Hmm? Sam?” The Doctor asked, distracted.
“yeah, he actually knows quite a bit of art history, he could be of help” Amy replied, trying to seem nonchalant.
“Oh really now? And how would you know,” The Doctor went back to tending to his ship.
“Well, I don't. But I'm assuming he would. He went to an ivy league uni” She said as casually as she could.
The Doctor sighed, shaking his head, pulling levers on the TARDIS before motioning for her to open the door. The Doctor had seemed to be very eager to please recently. She wasn’t sure why, but she would be damned if she didn’t use it to hang out with such a beautiful man. With excitement, Amy rushed out to find herself in a motel room, different than the one she had been in two days ago. A door opened, and out came Mr. Winchester. Amy couldn't help but bite her lip. It was evident he had just come out of the shower, as the only thing covering him was a towel around his waist.
“Amy! Jesus! knock... or something” Sam moved to hide behind the bathroom door, only letting her see his head.
“oh please, no. I don't mind. I'll see you in the TARDIS” She said, winking before going back inside, feeling more accomplished than she had in awhile. Her triumphant moment was ruined by The Doctor who seemed more like a dad than a friend, asking what she was so smug about
“Nothing” she sighed, pushing herself off the doors when she heard the knock on the door. She opened up and smirked at Sam “Oh, so you’re wearing clothes now,” she teased, causing him to become scarlet red. Whatever he was going to say was cut off by the doctor
“Oi! You two! Get in here”
Amy rolled her eyes dramatically and took Sam’s hand “ready to meet vincent van gogh?”
-
“God it’s so lovely here” Sam said, looking around, they had landed in an alleyway, and Amy honestly could not see the appeal. “Sure, it’s not Arcadia...but it’s so lovely...Are we really going to meet Van Gogh?” Sam asked, turning to look at Amy.
Amy smiled, for the first time in a long time having to look up to look him in the eyes, “Of course we are” Amy replied, looking around
“Well where do we find him?” Sam asked, inching closer to her. They were split apart by the Doctor
“In a local cafe” He replied
Amy lifted her brochure from the museum they had been in a while ago “Like this one?”
“Exactly” The Doctor nodded
Amy’s eyes lit up, noting the little cafe just up ahead “Like that one!” She took Sam’s hand and dragged him along with her as she giddily ran towards it, overhearing something about alcohol and trading it for a painting. After the Doctor failed to convince the man, who was oh so obviously Van Gogh, to take money so he could buy the drink, Amy offered to buy a bottle of wine and share it, quite clever if she did say so herself. After the alcohol, they ended up at Van Gogh’s house, all the while Amy had her eyes on Sam who seemed to be so mesmerized by all of it. His excitement was contagious, and like it had in Arcadia, the Doctor’s hesitance around Sam vanished. That night, they ended up laying on the ground, stargazing with Van Gogh.
“It’s been such a long time since I’ve just...stopped and watched the sky, appreciated it’s beauty like this” Sam said after a moment of peaceful silence. Amy squeezed his hand
“Well, you can always escape and come with us,”
“I’d like that” She could hear the smile in his voice, and a part of her knew The Doctor wouldn’t deny him.
Cause you, a feeling I can’t deny
“Oi! Pond!” The Doctor said, waving his hand in front of the red head who currently had her nose in a book.
“Oi yourself, I’m busy”Amy retorted, scoffing lightly and looking back down
“Is that the book Sam suggested?” The Doctor asked, irritating Amy as she was trying to read
“Yes, yes it is. And I'm trying to read it” she replied, pressing her lips together “I’m assuming you want me to pretend to be amazed as you work with your engine?” she asked, giving him an unamused look.
“I-no...no...I just wanted to know…” The Doctor said, walking over to the console “where you wanted to go”
“Well, I’d like to finish this book before we see Sam again,” Amy responded, closing her book with a sigh, realizing he was not going to be leaving her alone anytime soon.
“I didn’t say Sam was coming,” The Doctor said, watching Amy with the pretend bewildered expression he made when caught in a lie.
“Well no but you really liked him. He was amazing with Van Gogh and you admire him.” Amy said smugly “ You didn’t ask this many questions when we went to get him the other two times, what’s different now?” Even as she asked, she knew. There was a sadness that wouldn’t leave her alone. It was easy to ignore, because how can you be sad over something if you do not know what it is? She didn’t feel it, but sometimes she found herself crying, something that hadn’t happened up until recently, when she started being around Sam, when she started thinking about how she could settle down with him, “Terrible fate or not, he’s good company” She heard the Doctor sigh, the long exaggerated tell-tale that Amy was getting her way. The TARDIS came to a halt and the Doctor waited for her to open the door and that she did, excited to see a motel room even if it was a different one every time.
“Hmm, guess I should have expected you’d arrive” Sam’s voice said from behind her, causing her to jump “I’m afraid you’re going to have to leave though” he continued to speak, his breath tickling her neck, “I’m having company over” Amy swallowed, nodding gently and turning around. This was definitely not her Sam, well, not the Sam she knew, he wasn’t her’s, not really. Was he? Sam clearing his throat brought her out of her web of thoughts. Right. She had to go. With a small nod she rushed back into the TARDIS, ignoring as The Doctor asked her what was wrong. She didn’t know where she was going, she just couldn’t be around him right now. The pressure in her chest was getting heavier and tears threatened to spill from her eyes. Why did she feel like this? Why did Sam having company over make her feel so...so...angry? Why did it feel like she was losing someone she loved again. No, not loved. She didn’t love Sam Winchester. Right? She hasn’t loved anyone. Right? Especially not enough to miss them so much there was a constant ache in her chest. She wiped away a few escaped tears and returned to the main room, where the Doctor was waiting, clearly concerned
“I’m fine. He’s busy. Let’s go” Was the only explanation she gave as it felt like her entire world was falling apart, only for the Doctor to explain to her later that the Sam she had just met was soulless...
Let's light the kerosene tonight spark up like fireworks exploding in the sky, kick down the new year and the future
The TARDIS came to a halt and Amy rushed outside, expecting to see a motel room and hoping for Sam to be there. That was not the case. She found herself on a sidewalk, there were a couple small shops, all with christmas decor. In the center there was a tree but aside from that there was not much else. She looked around, wondering how despite Sam being taller than practically everyone, there was no sight of him. Just as she was giving up hope, someone ran into her. She would have fallen to the ground if not for the two strong arms that caught her “I’m so sorry. I wasn’t paying attention….Amy?” His voice seemed to calm the nerves that had been piling up.
“Sam! I was looking for you,” Amy replied, looking up into his eyes, noting that there was something different. He looked sad. “Are you okay?” she asked, pulling away from his warm embrace.
“Hmm? Yeah...yeah” they looked into each other’s eyes for a moment and she could see tears forming in his eyes and her heart ached. She watched him shake his head, and from his lips came the most broken voice she had ever heard, “No.”
-
In no time Amy had gotten to Sam’s motel room with him and had put some water to boil while The Doctor had gone to get something to eat and tea. “How do you not have a kettle or tea?” She asked, looking over at Sam who was sitting at the table
“Americans don’t really make tea...Jess loved tea. She had a tea for everything...” Sam shook his head, “Sorry”
Amy shook her head “No don’t apologize...this was the girl you were planning on proposing to, right?” Amy asked, remembering the conversation they had the first time she met him. He had also been sad like this. Grieving. Who died?
Sam nodded “Yeah...she’s gone...just like everyone else” he said quietly, and suddenly he didn’t look 25. He looked older. Sitting in front of her was a broken soldier, not the sweet caring man who always brought a smile to her face.It pained her to think that he had experienced so much at such a young age. It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair that sometime soon something so terrible was going to happen, he would lose his soul.
“What’s the date?” She asked, looking around
“Uh...after Christmas...the 30th I think?”
Amy smiled “What are we doing in here then? Don’t you Americans love fireworks?” she asked, grabbing her coat
Sam smiled “I’ve only ever had one real New Year’s, that was years ago…” his smile faded slowly “with Dean”
Amy noticed that sadness had replaced the joy that had briefly made an appearance earlier. That's when it clicked. It was Dean, “Well, grab your coat. We’re going to have a real New Year’s eve” She said with determination, only waiting for Sam to pull on his coat before dragging him with her to the nearest fireworks stand, which was not too far from where they were.
We can't get closer here, the walls are falling down
Amy sat with Sam, huddled up under the stars, a blanket over their shoulders and Sam’s arms around her. They had long since lit their fireworks, all that was left was a pile of trash. Sam had brought out some wine and that too had long since been discarded
“Any resolutions for this new year?” Amy asked, looking at Sam.
“No, not really...I mean...maybe I’ll try and …” he trailed off, shaking his head
“If it’s anything about being a good man...I already believe you are” Amy replied, turning to fully look him in the eye.
Sam smiled, a little light shone through those sad eyes “I guess so...I was going to say, I'd maybe try and be a little braver” Amy couldn't help but notice the way his eyes lingered to her lips.
“Oh really? Why don't you start now?” Amy pondered, inching ever closer to him, though given their position they couldn't get closer.
“Because I'm scared” Sam mumbled, leaning in as well, his forehead rested against hers as they stared into each other's eyes. The stars seemed dull in comparison to the two that were exploding with color just centimeters away from her.
“Then don't be” she responded, starting to realize this moment seemed to be plucked straight out of a romance novel. She didn't care how cheesy it was, this was all she wanted.
“Can I kiss you?” Amy was a little stunned he had asked. Most guys would have just done it. Then again, Sam wasn't most guys. He was more chivalrous than that. Wrapping her arms around Sam's neck, she brought her lips to his in a passionate collision. Every part of her could see this was right. This was perfect. Sam was her soulmate. She had no doubt about it then and especially not after the fiery and passionate night they experienced. Definitely no doubt as she lay in bed of the small motel room, Sam only a few meters away, cooking for her.
