Kelp forests, like this one in Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, are held down by holdfasts anchored to rocky substrates. Growing up towards the surface, gas bladders, called pneumatocysts, keep even the tallest kelp afloat. A giant kelp plant will have these bladders at the base of each blade, whereas bull kelp plants have only one that supports several blades near the surface. British Columbia's coastal kelp forests are an alien world unto themselves. The staggering array of colour, diversity and range of wildlife matches anything the coastal rainforests on the land can show off. Jacques Cousteau used to proclaim the waters of the Salish Sea one of his favourite dive locations on Earth - how fortunate we can visit it ad lib. I knew from the very beginning that I wanted dark background for my Orca. That was time and pencil consuming indeed, it took 9 hours of black nonstop colouring and 2 and a half black pencils. I also decided to use pencils only because that’s what I’m the most confident with. It takes a whole lot more time but it’s so worth it.

Hey there! I’m just going with the flow. My season is almost over (thank god) because if you follow my blog, you may have thought I was dead. #Repost @noaasanctuaries ・・・ This giant kelp was photographed in #ChannelIslands National Marine Sanctuary, but giant kelp is found all the way from southeast Alaska to Baja California, and also in Peru, Chile, Argentina, Tasmania and New Zealand! This macroalga grows to about 30 meters in height, though can grow to more than 50 meters in ideal conditions. Because it frequently grows in dense kelp forests, giant kelp provides essential shelter for many species of adult fish and serves as a nursery for juveniles.
