"Tudom, voltál már itt
De soha nem ugrasz le
Tudod, hogy nem várnak rád
Senki nincs lenn a mélybe
Mert aki nevet, azzal
Együtt nevet a világ
Aki meg sír, egyedül sír
Nem fognak várni rá"

Giving is a Joy: Karen Hannon
Last year my good friend went to volunteer in the trash dumps of Nueva Vida and La Chureca Nicaragua. He inspired a lot of us in the states to do service in our own communities. I decided to look for ways I could help in my neighborhood. Since my time is limited I really wanted to volunteer for an organization who was producing results. I wanted to make sure I was working with people who were present and committed.
My job is in events staffing and I work for two of the three major sports venues in Pittsburgh. At a lot of these events I see people struggling with language barriers. I realize the obstacles they face with even simple communication tasks such as asking directions. I signed up to volunteer to teach ESL through the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council. I saw the great need there was to help people with basic communication such as making a doctor’s appointment, signing up for a library card or filling out a job application. I soon realized that through helping people, I was getting as much or more back as I was giving. Together we learned and shared so much with and about each other and it was so fulfilling.
I also happen to have the greatest-yet-humble boss in the world who I have learned so much from. His philosophy is to take people who have never been given responsibility, give them a job they can be proud of and they will become responsible. I see first-hand the results of being appreciated and considered a valuable member of a team. I noticed that Team Tassy seemed to have this same philosophy. Treat all people with dignity and respect and they will become productive members of society.
I was familiar with the Rosenberg family, who were members of our church and attended the same grade school as my children. My husband would say, upon seeing Ian and his dad walking down the aisle of our church "look out, here comes the 'Great Wall' " (they were so tall that when they sat in front of us we could not see a thing!). I also watched Ian growing up and the inspiration he has been for so many via Penn State, Survivor, Pittsburgh Musical Theater, Thread and life in general. I heard him talk about what drew him to Haiti and then learned the whole story of Tassy Fils-Aime and fell in love with the people and the organization. I loved the no-frills no-fluff just get things done nature of their volunteer opportunities. Volunteering here was fun, productive and purposeful. In a world with not a lot of time -- Team Tassy is making the time -- and it is making a difference and I feel so lucky to be a part of that.
