           there was something utterly star-crossed about what had happened to them. to be forgotten by all but one. sasha stared at melanie like she might vanish before her eyes or morph into some awful creature like the one that had attacked her. in a way, she was the only one still anchoring her to her former life.

                               VOID GAZE FLICKERS DOWNWARD, toward injury, he watches carefully with a desire to squeal.   “ oh, oh how . . . terrible. ”    the prophet moves closer, but those eyes burn wholes in blooming crimson, it takes a long moment before he steps aside to let the stranger in.   “ absolutely terrible... ”   he murmurs, head tilts, interest shining in smiling expression, the word feels slick on his tongue, greasy, slimy. terrible.  it is a blaspheme and he should know better.     “ do . . . do you need help ? ”    he would like to help, not for the reason he should perhaps, but help is help, isn’t it ? blood drying on skin, oh isn’t it lovely ?  

           sasha had been careful to avoid any run-ins with her friends, because the thought of not being recognized was too painful to imagine. but being recognized and known for who she was ended up being what finally pushed her over the edge of blubbering tears. it was the first time since it had all happened that she’d let herself cry and it showed no signs of stopping.

I didn’t really want to complain, because it feels like so much fuss--” And after what she’d seen, felt, after Evan’s funeral, she was still drained. “But he just...” She tucks her hands into fists, frustration bubbling under the skin before she decides, actually, she’d rather talk to Melanie rather than at her about Mr. Sims. The one who watches her in the grave.

       ‘ that’s most of what i did in artifact storage. i’m a professional at getting up close and seeing what happens. ‘ not that it made her feel any less scared of what would happen when they did. most of the things in artifacts would paralyze or mesmerize at most, but whether this was an artifact or monster, there would be a very good chance it would try and kill them.
