I spent the weekend --14 straight hours on Saturday alone--deep-diving back into my research of the Koons family's "Spiritual Machine," the world's first "battery" meant to charge the atmosphere to allow the physical manifestation of spirits. In March, I'll be lecturing on the topic at Ohio University, and staying several nights on the farm where Koons' "spirit room" once stood. My goal is to locate not only the original site of the room that housed the spiritual machine, but also other locations in the county that hosted similar devices. It is, quite appropriately, like finding a needle in a haystack, and a weird mix of old-fashioned archival research and cutting edge satellite tracking and geography. It's fun, exhausting, rewarding, and harrowing, but when I get my boots on the ground I'll be prepared like no other. And I'll be broadcasting some of the trip live for you folks!
