A Crown Left at the Doorstep
(DC x DP — Soft/Dark AU: He Chooses Them)
Gotham learns Danny’s habits before Danny realizes he has any.
He sits on the windowsill at night.
Doesn’t sleep much.
Flinches when doors close too loudly.
And—
he always watches the sky.
The Almost-Normal Days
Danny Fenton starts… settling.
It’s small things.
Letting Alfred Pennyworth make him tea without apologizing for it.
Sitting a little closer during movie nights.
Not disappearing when footsteps echo down the hallway.
He laughs once.
Quiet.
Surprised.
Like it slipped out by accident.
The Manor notices.
So does Bruce Wayne.
But he doesn’t say anything.
Doesn’t push.
Just… stays.
The Thing That Watches Back
Because Danny isn’t the only one learning Gotham.
Gotham is learning him.
The shadows linger a second longer when he passes.
The wind stills when he steps outside.
Streetlights flicker—
not broken—
just… aware.
Tim Drake notices first.
“Bruce,” he says quietly, pulling up readings, “the city’s reacting to him again.”
Bruce doesn’t look away from the monitors.
“I know.”
The Night It Returns
It starts gently.
That’s what makes it worse.
The temperature drops—
just enough for breath to fog.
The lights dim—
just enough to feel wrong.
Danny freezes mid-step.
“…they’re here.”
The words come out hollow.
Like he already knows how this ends.
“King.”
The voice doesn’t echo.
It settles.
Heavy.
Final.
The walls don’t shake.
Reality doesn’t tear.
It simply—
opens.
The Ghost Realm Calls
They don’t flood in this time.
They don’t need to.
One figure steps through.
Tall.
Endless.
Crowned in something that looks like eternity.
“You were taken.” “You were misplaced.” “You will return.”
Danny’s hands shake.
The glow under his skin flickers back to life.
“I don’t want to,” he whispers.
The entity tilts its head.
“Desire is irrelevant.”
The Pull
Danny drops to his knees.
Not forced.
Not grabbed.
Pulled.
From the inside.
Memories slam into him—
a throne of cold light
endless voices bowing
power that never asked if he wanted it
“I can’t—” he chokes. “I can’t do that again—”
The Line That Changes Everything
Before the entity can move—
Batman steps forward.
“No.”
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
But Gotham listens.
“You don’t get to take him,” Bruce says, voice steady as stone.
The entity turns slowly.
“You misunderstand.” “He does not belong to you.”
Bruce doesn’t hesitate.
“He belongs where he chooses to stay.”
The Choice
The pull tightens.
Danny gasps—
hands digging into the floor—
eyes flickering between green and something deeper.
“Danny,” Bruce says, quieter now.
Closer.
“You don’t have to go.”
That’s it.
No commands.
No orders.
No expectations.
Just—
a choice.
Danny looks up.
At Bruce.
At the Manor.
At the people who never asked what he was—
only if he was okay.
His voice shakes.
“…what if I break this place too?”
Bruce’s answer is immediate.
“Then we fix it. Together.”
The Crown Falls
Something inside Danny snaps—
not in pain—
in decision.
The glow surges—
then steadies.
“I’m not your king,” Danny says, voice trembling but firm.
The entity goes still.
“I choose this,” he continues, softer now.
“I choose them.”
The pressure spikes—
violent—
furious—
Then—
breaks.
The crown that had started forming above his head—
cracks.
And falls.
Not shattered.
Not destroyed.
Just…
left behind.
After
The room is quiet again.
Danny sways—
then steadies when a hand lands on his shoulder.
He doesn’t flinch this time.
Bruce doesn’t move his hand.
Doesn’t say anything.
Doesn’t need to.
Final Line (Hook)
And somewhere beyond the veil—
something ancient watches in silence—
because for the first time in forever—
their king chose to be someone’s son instead.
