after poe gives finn his jacket and rey wears it on the starkiller mission, it becomes a good luck talisman 

whenever poe goes on a particularly dangerous trip, finn will wrap the jacket around his shoulders and feel the slightest bit better abt seeing his love dive headfirst into danger

before that, when finn wakes up, he finds he’s wearing the jacket, and there’s a note in the breastpocket from poe that makes him cry

“just…come home,” poe says, forehead knocking against finn’s, the sun spreading out over the tarmac. he smooths out the shoulders, hands lingering on finn’s jaw. finn’s eyes are liquid love

over time, the jacket fades and gets ratty, but they love it and wear it anyway

near the end: poe and finn are caught, and poe offers himself if finn goes free. 

after the crying, the pleading, the memorizing poe’s face, finn knows he can’t stop this riptide. so he takes off the jacket one last time, shoulders past the first order troops, and wraps poe in the soft leather. 

and the universe doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes. same eyes, different people. 

“keep it,” finn tells poe, voice husky, as loss tends to do. he kisses poe. their tears are the salt of the ocean of their honeymoon on their tongues. “keep it. it suits you.”

rhymes. poe remembers the legends, the stories. he meets finn’s eyes as he’s dragged away. smiles.

 “I know,” he says. and then he’s gone, and the jacket’s gone, and finn’s soul is ripped out of his chest and it’s gone, too. 

but he feels the slightest bit better knowing poe has the jacket. it doesn’t mean nothing. and the universe doesn’t repeat, but it rhymes. poe has told finn the old stories, too. he knows how this will end. so he smiles through his tears.
