An eccentric beauty, she was known for throwing lush a-list parties, skeet shooting in expensive furs, publicly smoking cigarettes from an opera-length holder, and openly kissing both men and women. It came as a shock when, at the peak of her career, newspaper headlines reported her death. Her fans reeled. How could something as mundane as pneumonia snuff out such a shining star? Loved ones later reported that on her deathbed, Billie insisted on being dressed in her favorite gown and made-up so she could "give death a proper greeting."
