Just some lovely Moxiety, and the prompt âHaunted Carnivalâ
âI love you Patton, but do we really have to do this?â Virgil griped, following along slowly despite his hand being tugged on. âThe place has been abandoned for years. If there really is someone there we should be calling childline to report it or something not - not this.â
Patton turned his pout back at him for the hundredth time since first mentioning what heâd heard while walking home a week ago. âBut then weâd be wasting their time. Letâs just find whoever keeps crying and once we have them looked after we can call somewhere that will be able to take care of them for the long term.â
The reasoning sounded fairly logical, or at least it did until Virgil remembered they were talking about breaking into a long abandoned carnival because Patton thought there was a child inside it hurt or upset. His introspection instead of responding gave Patton enough time to climb through the gap in the fence though the hem of his jeans did get caught and tear.
âWhere do you think theyâd be hiding then?â He muttered, following through the gap, already glancing around for anything they might fall over as well as where the rides were that he hadnât seen in almost a decade. âProbably somewhere inside, so should we check the ghost train, and crazy house first?â
âNo, Those rides are far over there, and the crying always seems to be close to this area. Perhaps thereâs a space in the middle of the carousel they could hide in? Itâs all sheltered anyway.â Patton insisted, waving towards the opposite side of the park, before heading off to their right.
Virgil did follow at first until the other started climbing over each of the rides, looking for any spaces that children could hear, even as they both began to pick up the sound of crying again. âWhy are you putting yourself in more danger, Pat? Just stick to the pathways. We can follow our ears now so safe routes to find the children is better, right?â
âBut what if there are other kids hiding as well?â The wide eyes would usually have him folding but when the risk of getting injured was as high as it could be in an abandoned carnival in the middle or the night, Virgil was not going to bend.Â
âPathways, or I am calling Thomas and asking what he thinks we should do.â Sometimes it was the best thing to suggest for either of them to listen to the requests that they bring in their old teacher for help on a situation. Heâd taught them a lot over the years, but looking out for each other was the strongest lesson.
It did the trick though as Patton easily scrambled off the teacups ride heâd been stood on, grabbing his hand though still looking disgruntled. âFine then.â
The crying had stopped shortly before they managed to reach the carousel, but even with them both looking around it there could be no way to shelter or hide in the middle section of it. Any doors were just to small cupboards and the buttons were rusted over, unlikely to work after years of neglect, not that either really wanted to press them.
âWhere else could they-â Virgilâs words were cut off by the ride turning on though heâd been stood at the edge of it looking over the other nearby rides.
âWhat Did You DO!?â He yelled, turning around, expecting that Patton would be near the buttons.
He wasnât though. He was sprawled in one of the carriages, having fallen as soon as the movement and music started. âI didnât touch anything. Whatâs going on, how does this even work? The news said all electrical wires were cut when they shut it down.â
Their fear was reflected between them, but instead of letting himself panic, Virgil took a few deep breaths, clinging to one of the horses to remain standing. âApparently, the crying you heard was a ghost, and now they want us to enjoy the ride.â He tried to phrase it in a happy way, knowing anything scary or threatening would upset his boyfriend more. âWhy donât you take a couple of deep breaths and come over to me when you can? Iâm going to work my way over to you as well.â
He just got a nod in response, though there was movement in one of the mirrors which couldnât have been reflected. âOkay, perhaps if they want us to enjoy this we should just smile. Itâs a fun ride isnât it? We loved the one we went on at Christmas, and this is just like that.â Virgil kept his voice steady, holding all his panic over the situation in as he spoke of happy things.
The sound of giggling and two translucent figures appearing opposite Patton in the carriage had them both freezing again, before Patton scrambled out of it, waving, and wearing a bright grin, even as the grip he managed to get on Virgilâs arm was tight enough to bruise.
âLovely to meet you, kiddos, but, we really need to be heading home now.â Pat explained, looking at the spinning world from the carousel, and glancing to Virgil. It was slow enough that they could safely jump off as long as they timed it to face the clear pathway. âEnjoy the rest of the carnival.â He called as Virgil tugged his arm to say jump.
The giggled followed them through the route theyâd taken, all the way until the gap in the fence again.
âPerhaps next time we hear crying we can actually report it?â Virgil commented, through another fake grin as they waved to the translucent boys that had followed them still.
âGood idea.â Patton agreed, more than willing to be away from the carnival and the ghosts that apparently lived there.
