Did you still want cheerful headcanons? 'Cos it strikes me that after Thorin died in BotFA, he might well have got lost on the way to the halls of Mahal (twice) and ended up in Yavanna's pastures, where I'm pretty sure Bella & Bungo would've taken good care of him and quite possibly taught him how to bake scones 'till his hobbit boyfriend turned up...
Sorry but oh my god that actually did cheer me up. Because lmao what if like Thorin mistook Bungo as Bilbo because of their hair color, and that’s how he realizes he just met Bilbo’s parents. You know Belladonna… once she finds out that this rather handsome dwarf knows the name of her only son, and finds out the adventure her son has gone through, she’d try to get all of the good tibbits why this dwarf was looking for Bilbo. Bungo’s just all apologetic on the side, now that Thorin can’t get out of Belladonna’s grasp. The two proud parents then tell Thorin of their son during teatime. Thorin then continues to long for Bilbo from all the sweet childhood stories he has heard. Both Belladonna and Bungo realizes that Thorin has feelings for Bilbo, but thinks it’s unrequited. So they decide to show him something.
Thorin finds out that during Belladonna and Bungo’s death anniversary, Bilbo would visit their grave and would tell them the same stories of the quest Thorin has told them, but in Bilbo’s pov this time. And in Bilbo’s version, he paints Thorin’s character with so much love and adoration, even when the dwarf did have a crappy personality and attitude towards him in the beginning. Bilbo has just grown fond of that stupid dwarf, and still mourning for him. He would tell his parents’ gravestone how much they would have loved Thorin if they ever met him, because he know he does. He was right though. They do approve of Thorin.
So after that, along with Belladonna and Bungo, there’s a dwarf always waiting and longing to meet his hobbit once again when time comes.
You know what I love lego mini figures? I can basically use some of the lego pieces, and swap it onto other lego mini figures. So let’s say I got a ghost lego mini figure, I can do shit like these.
Have Ghost!Lego!Thorin just at loss while watch over a sad Lego!BIlbo dealing with the heartache of losing his beloved.
Or
Ghost!Lego!Bilbo trying to comfort a sad Lego!Thorin just closing his heart and just placing all the guilt to himself.
Legos amuse me so.
Oh nooo D8 But imagine how guilty ghost!Thorin would feel. Just seeing that transition of Bilbo's emotions; from the crying and screaming and grieving, to this resigned acceptance and numbness and he'd want to help so badly but couldn't! I wonder what'd happen if the One Ring had the ability to let Bilbo see Thorin (and other ghosts)? That would make him all the more reluctant to part with it I think, even though Thorin would urge him to let go of it.
Ghost!Thorin witnessing all Bilbo’s pain and hurting for it is not so secretely one of my favorite things +u+But maybe the One Ring - having a coscience and all - would hide Thorin’s ghost from Bilbo’s because it knows seeing Thorin would have - maybe in the long run - a positive effect on him that it doesn’t want, since it seeks to own his mind. Thorin would desperately try to hinder its power to get through to Bilbo and warn him, but in the end there’s nothing he can do but sit there and watch :C
After the tears and screaming, all that’s left is numbness. How can you come back and live after losing so much?
Sort of follow up to this

"I would rather have one life time with you than face all the ages of this world alone" except proportionally, Arwen may have had a similar amount of time together with Aragorn as Bilbo with Thorin, since she lived centuries longer
“You’re not alone, Bilbo. I’m always here with you. Don’t worry. We’ll be together again in due time, but for now. Stay strong, and live your life.”
One warm spring evening, just when Bilbo is about to have his dinner, there is a knock at the door.
And it's Thorin.
But in Dwalin's body ...
imagine that after the battle, with thorin, fili, and kili dead, bilbo holds the acorn, the arkenstone, and the ring in his hands and wishes that he were with them. and because these are all powerful objects in their own ways, they grant his wish and the spirits of thorin and the princes are now tied to bilbo but because the ring is an evil douche and the arkenstone is only there to ruin everything they make it so that bilbo can't see, hear, or communicate with the durins right away. so thorin and his nephews spend for-freaking-ever trying to figure out how to communicate with their burglar.
but by the time they figure it out (because only they could instigate it), bilbo's already half crazy because of the ring and thinks they're only visions of the past or something. and bilbo's only just starting to believe that they're there and he can see and talk to them when frodo has to go destroy the ring and because the ring was the main source of the power for the curse thing, the durin's spirits are finally transported to mahal's halls.
and bilbo is bereft because he can't figure out what he did wrong again
