ESDC announced changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program.   On September 26, lots of Canadian employers received an email from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) regarding the forthcoming changes in the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). The government will return to a 6-month Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) validity period for new LMIA applications for all employers, however, those received up to September 30 will be granted a 9-month validity period. Unfortunately, the LMIA submissions by email will be disabled for fee-paying streams. ESDC admitted that LMIA Online was somewhat criticized. Visas issued to international students fall 22 percent this year   While restrictions on international travel have resulted in fewer international students arriving in Canada this year, the number of study permits issued to international students also fell 22.3 percent in the second quarter. There are indications that admissions for the fall semester are also likely to be much lower this year. Colleges and universities are likely to face a loss of billions of dollars this year because of lower admissions. This sharp fall in the number of international students arriving in Canada is considered bad for the Canadian labour market. What provinces benefited the most from Express Entry in 2020?   The main beneficiary of Express Entry in 2020 is Ontario. In the first half of 2020, it welcomed almost 60% of all Express Entry immigrants. The only two other provinces which may be regarded as the beneficiaries of Express Entry are British Columbia and Alberta, which attracted 21.6% and 10%, respectively. All other provinces combined accepted less than 9% of Express Entry immigrants. International students are concerned about fee increases and future in Canada   The fall term in Canadian colleges and universities will start in a few away. For instance, a group of international students from the University of Toronto established the International Student Advocacy Network (ISAN) to advocate their rights in communication with university officials. The pandemic did not affect the plans to immigrate to Canada   The recent survey by the World Education Service (WES) demonstrates that the COVID-19 pandemic did not change the interest of foreign nationals to immigrate to Canada. The survey showed that 45% of respondents in June 2020 stated their interest in coming to Canada has increased. This is 7% up from April's rate. The public calls the government to waive the citizenship fee   New immigrants are still waiting on the Trudeau government to deliver on its promise to wipe out the fee to become a citizen as soon as possible. The Liberal Party had promised to waive the $630 fee during the fall 2019 election campaign. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) will lose almost $400 million over four years if the fee is eliminated. In the meantime, the backlogs and waiting time for new citizenship ceremonies are growing as the traditional in-person group oath-taking has been cancelled since March as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. IRCC has since moved the citizenship ceremonies online.
