Rating:Â M Chapters: 2/? Pairing: Ghilan'nain/Andruil Characters: Ghilan'nain, Solas, Andruil, Mythal Tags:Â Graphic Depictions of Violence, Elvhenan, Body Horror, Blood Magic, Harm to Animals, Canonical Character Death, Hunters & Hunting, Retelling of Dalish Myths, Dragon Age: The Veilguard Spoilers Summary:Â An exploration of Ghilan'nain's descent from "the most sensitive of us" to what she eventually becomes, spanning the earliest days of her birth to her escape from the Black City.
Solas guides her to a dead titan in the east, the dry ridges of its carcass a looming mountain over the inland. At its feet is a rocky basin. He tells her it was once a lake under the titans' dominion but has since dried up in their slumber. Its bed is littered with sundried vegetation, long-bleached bones, and the pungent, rotting flesh of unlucky creatures that found themselves trapped at the bottom.
Lyrium makes glowing, distorted mirrors of the walls. It is the hardened blood of the titan—crystallized carrion of a long-dead creature—dried just the same as the lake.
She scales the rock and drops into the bowl's base, where the lyriumsong reverberates with a thousand-year-long echo. The very air vibrates with it, as if she stands beneath the dome of a rung bell. Her hair stands on end; her muscles tense; her spirit is compelled.
She gets to work.

a dash of description from the ghilly fic wip
Solas guides her to a dead titan in the east, the dry ridges of its carcass a looming mountain over the inland. At its feet is a rocky basin; he tells her it was once a lake under the titans' dominion, but has since dried up in their slumber. Its bed is littered with sundried vegetation, long-bleached bones, and the pungent, rotting flesh of newly dead creatures unlucky enough to have found themselves trapped in the basin. Lyrium makes glowing, distorted mirrors of the walls. It is the hardened blood of the titan—crystallized carrion of a long-dead creature—dried just the same as the lake.

Today I share a snippet of the Ghilan'nain fic I'm writing--here, her gentle beginnings.
Green wisps of Fear round nearby trunks. Their chartreuse light is reflected in glossy eyes as the owl stares unblinkingly at her. "You have nothing to fear from me, little one," she attempts to comfort it, testing the wing's delicate bones with slight pinches of her fingers. The owl trembles still, but she continues learning its shape with slow and cautious precision until Curiosity is called forth, ushering Fear from the thicket. She releases a grateful sigh and continues until she finds the break in the wing. It's a violent break, the bone jagged, but she finds that it's simple enough to encourage the pieces together again. The Fade answers eagerly to her pull, and the bones answer more eagerly still, with an understanding that it is their nature to be bound. Stitching them together leaves a bright harmony in the wake of her magic. It brings a welcome satisfaction, but she doesn't yet release the owl. Curiosity has swirled up a tree, and now darts between the leaves that sway above her, flashing its yellow light like the sun on her shoulders. She turns her face to the canopy, contemplating, and releases the owl to the ground. It does not flee. It only tilts its head beneath Curiosity's flickering light, eyes wide and golden. She makes a decision, unsure where it will lead. Her hands dig out a rock from the dirt; her magic sharpens it to a point. She gathers the ends of her hair in a fist and slices the sharp edge through. The cut strands fall to her knees, silkwhite against the dirt. Then she fits the rock behind her cheek, wedges it between her teeth, and bites. Blood and pain ooze from the vacancy in her gums, but she ignores it to gather her tooth, the hair, and a fistfull of dirt in her hands.
