Festival Fashion Tips: Your Style & Music Go Hand-In-Hand
Not every festival girl is the same, therefore, not every festival girl dresses the same. If you need a bit of festival style inspiration, look no further than these carefully-crafted looks influenced by a few of our favorite music genres. Pay attention, ladies; it may just be high time for a closet overhaul. Itâs spring cleaning, Festy-style.
Punk/Garage Rock/Industrial
As this yearâs Met Gala so kindly demonstrated, punk rock never goes out of style. However, if you donât have $10,000 to drop on a designer gown studded with spikes, there are far more affordable (and authentic) ways to rock the look. In fact, an outfit modeled in the style of good old fashioned rock ânâ roll is one of the chicest, and simplest, to sport at a festival.
First and foremost, forego all color andâ for the most partâ stick to basic black: black dresses, black skirts, and a black leather jacket. You can even go full-out Edie Sedgwick and rock some opaque black tights and dark eyeliner, because who needs to stay cool when you can look cool instead?
Other acceptable options include combat boots, striped tees, something ripped (tights, shirt, jacket), and giant black sunglassesâ the key to throwing off that essential mysterious vibe. Maintaining a slightly androgynous look can only work to your benefit.

You donât care about Pitchforkâs latest buzz band. Youâre the type of festy gal that wants to do one thing, and one thing only: dance. Plus, youâd like to get a little cray (or totally cray) in the process. Lucky for you, pretty much anything goes within the rules of EDM/Electro festival style.
When it comes to festival outfits, your motto is go big or go home. For better or worse, neon is your middle name. Donât be afraid to get weird, wild, and rip shit up (shirts, tights) when need be. Your look is comprised of platform sneakers, shirts and dresses with cut-outs, and colorful jewelry and glasses. Accessorize your look with an inflatable giraffe. Seriously, do whatever the fuck you want.

When it comes to music festivals, you prefer going with the flow. So long as you pin a few flowers in your hair and sway to the beat of your favorite tunes, youâre golden. If youâre a fan of psych rock or the Boho look, you like staying comfortable and classic, with a pronounced west coast vibe. Think back to those quintessential crochet-heavy days of Woodstock in â69.
Itâs no surprise that youâre into flowy dresses, sandals, and hats. Just remember that there are ways to do boho right, but also ways it can go terribly wrong (sorry, Vanessa Hudgens and Paris Hiltonâ itâs not 2002.) Please, donât go overboard with the fringe, braids, too cropped crop tops, or anything youâve made yourself. Keep in mind that you want to look like a classic hippie festival chick, not a smelly festival chick.

Do you like hosting tea parties? Snuggling with kittens? Do you currently star on the Fox sitcom âNew Girl?â If so, then you just might be twee. The polarizing genre is still beloved within its small yet devoted community, characterized by those who love things like baking, vintage clothing, and most of all, sweet, sunny pop jams.
Twee outfits are definitely not mosh pit approved, but then again, they donât ever have to be. Itâs not often that the twee musician chooses to crowd surf, or break her ukulele over an amp. After all, colorful, polka-dotted dresses, mary-jane flats, vintage cardigans, and hair barrettes are made more for swaying softly to a gentle summer breeze.
