Day 27: Chronic

Even lying down, pain throbbed throughout his body with every heartbeat. It wasn’t the sharp kind of pain that signaled an injury. This was the dull, fatigued ache he’d come to associate with overworking his body.
“Overworking.” Link scathingly added the sarcastic quotation marks in his head. This time, overworking was walking for two hours, three days in a row. Groose did all the heavy lifting and carried their bags. Zelda mapped out their routes and had her sword in hand, clearing the path of monsters and foliage. Link was there.
They’d hope to make it much farther today. Zelda and Groose could have, if Link hadn’t been there to slow them down. Outside the tent, Zelda and Groose were excitedly talking about their plans for the Surface—plans Link knew he would be around for, but hardly able to help with.
Link tried to stop his thoughts from racing too much. His head was fuzzy and full of fog, and thinking only made everything feel heavier.
A single tear slipped free, sliding slowly down his cheek. He’d cry, if he had any energy left to spare.
