On This Day In Royal History . 19 July 1821 . King George IV coronation . . ā¼ When George III died in 1820, the Prince Regent, then aged 57, ascended the throne as George IV, with no real change in his powers. He had been the Prince Regent following the decline in his fatherās mental illness for eleven years. . The New kings lifestyle was extraordinary & extravagant in every way. He had enjoyed a huge number of mistresses in his earlier days; his gluttonous love of food & drink was proverbial; & his exotic taste in art & architecture had already produced Englandās most flamboyant building ā the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. . Then came the coronation possibly the most extravagant in history. Seven supporters, eldest sons of peers, were needed to uphold the nine yards of his heavy & magnificent train of crimson velvet, decorated with golden stars. Beneath the train he wore a tight-fitting white satin suit in sixteenth-century style, with a neo-classical mantle of blue velvet, embroidered in gold & lined with ermine. On his head he flaunted a black Spanish hat decked with white ostrich feathers & a heronās plume. Curls of his wig fell coquettishly over his forehead. . The painter Benjamin Haydon was present to see the kingās entry & wrote a memorable description: āSomething rustles, & a being buried in satin, feathers & diamonds rolls gracefully into his seat. The room rises with a sort of feathered, silken thunder. Plumes wave, eyes sparkle, glasses are out, mouths smile & one man becomes the prime object of attraction to thousands. The way in which the King bowed was really royal. As he looked towards the peeresses & foreign ambassadors, he showed like some gorgeous bird of the eastā. . . . #Onthisdayinhistory #thisdayinhistory #theyear1821 #coronation #d19jul #kinggeorgeIV #GeorgeIV #HouseofHanover #History #BritishMonarchy #RoyalHistory #Portraitpainting #historyinpictures #Britishhistory #Britishroyals #otd #Britishroyalfamily #Britishroyalty #Westminster #Westminsterabbey #Royals #GreatBritain #Historic #HistoryFacts #onthisday #Royalhistory #Theking #onthisday #London šØ Royal Collection Trust/Ā© Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth IIĀ 2021. George IV . (b. 12 August 1762 ā d. 26 June 1830) . George was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland & King of Hanover. From 1811 until his accession in 1820, he served as regent during his fatherās final mental illness. . At the age of 18, in dramatic contrast with his prosaic, scandal-free father, he threw himself into a life of dissipation & wild extravagance involving heavy drinking & numerous mistresses & escapades. He was a witty conversationalist, drunk or sober, & showed good, but grossly expensive, taste in decorating his palace. Animosity developed between the prince & his father, who desired more frugal behaviour on the part of the heir apparent. The prince was plunged into debt by his exorbitant lifestyle. His father refused to assist him. . Georgeās heavy drinking & indulgent lifestyle had taken their toll on his health by the late 1820s. While still Prince of Wales, he had become obese through his huge banquets & copious consumption of alcohol; by 1797 his weight had reached 17 stone 7 pounds (111 kg; 245 lb). By 1824, his corset was made for a waist of 50 inches (130 cm). He suffered from gout, arteriosclerosis, peripheral edema (ādropsyā), & possibly porphyria. In his last years, he spent whole days in bed & suffered spasms of breathlessness that would leave him half-asphyxiated. . The King took laudanum to counteract severe bladder pains, which left him in a drugged & mentally handicapped state for days on end. He underwent surgery to remove a cataract in September 1829, by which time he was regularly taking over 100 drops of laudanum before state occasions. . By 1830, his weight was recorded to be 20 stone (130 kg; 280 lb). Attacks of breathlessness due to dropsy forced him to sleep upright in a chair, & doctors frequently tapped his abdomen to drain excess fluid. . George was described as the āFirst Gentleman of Englandā on account of his style & manners. He was bright, clever, & knowledgeable, but his laziness & gluttony led him to squander much of his talent. . . On This Day In History . 7th January 1796 . Princess Charlotte of Wales was born at Carlton House, London. . . About Charlotte ; . Princess Charlotte Augusta of WalesĀ was the only child ofĀ George, Prince of WalesĀ (later to become King George IV) &Ā Caroline of Brunswick. . ā¼ Had she outlived both her grandfatherĀ King George IIIĀ & her father, she would have become Queen of theĀ United Kingdom, but she died following childbirth at the age of 21. . ā¼ Charlotte's parents disliked each other from before their arranged marriage & soon separated. The Prince of Wales left most of Charlotte's care to governesses & servants, but only allowed her limited contact with the Princess of Wales, who eventually left the country. . ā¼ As Charlotte grew to adulthood, her father pressured her to marryĀ William, Hereditary Prince of OrangeĀ (later King of the Netherlands), but after initially accepting him, Charlotte soon broke off the intended match. This resulted in an extended contest of wills between her & her father, & finally the Prince of Wales permitted her to marryĀ Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-SaalfeldĀ (later King of the Belgians). After a year & a half of happy marriage, Charlotte died on 6 November 1817 after giving birth to a stillborn son. . ā¼ Charlotte's death set off tremendous mourning among the British, who had seen her as a sign of hope & a contrast both to her unpopular father & to her grandfather, whom they deemed mad. . ā¾ As she had been King George III's only legitimate grandchild, there was considerable pressure on the King's unmarried sons to find wives. King George III's fourth son,Ā Edward, Duke of Kent, fathered the eventual heir,Ā Victoria, who was born 18 months after Charlotte's death. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #History #Heritage #TheYear1796 #HouseofHanover #Thisdayinhistory #PrincessCharlotte #CharlotteofWales #PrincessCharlotteofWales #Princess #Monarchy #Royalty #Britishroyals #Hanover #HistoryFacts #London #GeorgeIV #CarolineofBrunswick ##D7Jan #BritishMonarchy (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsVbalVlKD_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ubazg6wo00nj

The Coronation of George IV: A Lavish Display of Royal Splendor
On July 19, 1821, George IV of the United Kingdom was crowned King of the United Kingdom in a grand coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Although he had ruled as prince regent since 1811 due to the illness of his father, George III, the coronation formally marked his accession to the throne following George IIIās death in January 1820.
The ceremony became famous for its extraordinary scale and expense, reflecting George IVās passion for fashion, art, and royal spectacle. The king wore an elaborate coronation outfit decorated with jewels and carried out a ceremony filled with pageantry. The event also featured a lavish banquet at Westminster Hall, where thousands gathered to witness the celebration.
George IVās reign was marked by cultural achievements, including the flourishing of the Regency style in architecture, fashion, and the arts, but it was also overshadowed by political controversies and his difficult personal relationships, especially his troubled marriage to Queen Caroline. His coronation remains one of the most extravagant in British history, representing both the grandeur and the challenges of the early 19th-century monarchy.
Caroline of Brunswick and George IV: A Royal Marriage Turned Scandal
The marriage between Caroline of Brunswick and George IV was one of the most infamous royal relationships in British history. Their union, arranged for political and financial reasons, began in 1795 but quickly descended into hostility, mistrust, and public scandal. George entered the marriage unwillingly and remained emotionally attached to Maria Fitzherbert, whom he had secretly married in 1785 despite the marriage being legally invalid under British law.
The relationship was disastrous from the beginning. George reportedly found her unattractive and was disappointed by the match, while Caroline was shocked by his coldness and extravagant lifestyle. Georgeās drinking, gambling, and lavish spending created further tension, while Caroline struggled to adapt to the strict expectations of royal life. Despite their unhappy relationship, they had one child, Princess Charlotte of Wales, born in 1796.
Soon after Charlotteās birth, George and Caroline separated permanently. George restricted Carolineās access to court life, while rumors and accusations about both their personal lives spread throughout Britain. Caroline traveled abroad in 1814, living in Europe for several years and gaining a reputation for her independence. Meanwhile, George attempted to secure a divorce by accusing her of adultery, but his efforts were complicated by his own unpopular reputation and public sympathy for Caroline.
When George became king in 1820, the conflict reached a dramatic peak. Caroline returned to Britain expecting recognition as queen, but George refused to allow her to take her place beside him at his coronation. The government introduced the Pains and Penalties Bill 1820, which sought to strip Caroline of her title and dissolve the marriage based on allegations of misconduct. The proceedings became a national sensation, with crowds supporting Caroline and criticizing Georgeās own moral failures.
The bill eventually failed after intense public opposition, and Caroline was recognized as queen in name, though George continued to exclude her from royal ceremonies. She attempted to attend his coronation in 1821 but was denied entry to Westminster Abbey. Shortly afterward, Carolineās health declined, and she died on August 7, 1821, only a few weeks after the coronation she had hoped to witness.
George IV of the United Kingdom: A Controversial Kingās Reign Ends
On June 26, 1830, King George IV of the United Kingdom died at Windsor Castle at the age of 67, ending a reign marked by political change, personal controversy, and cultural influence. He had become king in 1820 after serving as Prince Regent for his father, George III, during the latterās illness.
George IV was known for his extravagant lifestyle, love of art, architecture, and fashion, but his reputation was also damaged by his troubled marriages, heavy spending, and conflicts with politicians. His reign saw important developments, including the growing influence of Parliament, debates over Catholic emancipation, and the early movements toward social reform.
Despite his personal flaws, George IV left a lasting mark on British culture. His support for architecture and the arts helped shape landmarks such as the transformation of Buckingham House into Buckingham Palace. He was succeeded by his younger brother, William IV, whose reign would bring further political reforms, including the Reform Act of 1832.
