Min gets stays overnight in Genius Lab during a typhoon.
“Ah… so much better,” Min said, sighing as she stepped out of the shower in the BigHit women’s locker room. She had spent a good amount of time in one of the dance studios with her boyfriend Jimin, meaning she was sweaty and gross. They often had dance sessions with each other, so Min was no stranger to the BigHit showering and locker facilities. The only other thing she had planned for her Saturday was to spend some time in Genius Lab with Yoongi, which she did regularly as well… no point in going all the way home to get showered and dressed.
She went over to the locker that had been rented out to her and pulled out a pair of leggings and a shirt that once belonged to Jimin... Min had joined all the boys in their dance practice once, months and months ago… she had no intentions of dancing but was somehow pulled into it. Of course, she got sweaty and gross after the impromptu practice, and since it was impromptu, she didn’t have a change of clothes. Hobi had managed to swipe one of Jimin’s extra shirts from his locker without him knowing and gave it to Min. As soon as Jimin saw Min wearing his shirt, he was obsessed and let her keep it. It’s been one of her favorite shirts ever since.
She dried her hair, then slipped on her pair of glasses before checking the text she received from Jimin. “I’ve already left, sorry I couldn’t wait for you! Jin-hyung needs me to stop by the grocery store on the way home… I will see you later, though. Have fun with Yoongi-hyung! (but not too much fun;)) Love you!” his text read. Min smiled as she read it and replied, “no worries! You didn’t need to wait for me! Lol I can’t have too much fun without you there ;) Love you too!” She packed up all her essentials into her purse, put on her pair of slides, then headed out of the locker room.
She took the elevator up to where the music studios were, and found her way down the hall to Genius Lab. She pulled out her keyring and found the key to the studio, first unlocking it, then plugging in the passcode. Yoongi’s was the only studio that was both passcode-protected and locked with a lock and key. Only a few people knew the passcode and even fewer people had a copy of the key… and Min was one of them. As she opened the door and entered the studio, she was unsurprised to find the lights dimmed and Min Suga laying on the small couch fast asleep.
Min looked down at her watch. “6:00 PM… he should be waking up soon,” she said to herself, fully familiar with his weird nocturnal tendencies. She sat down in his desk chair and swiveled around to his desk. She noticed one of his infamous yellow legal pads, with the title “SEESAW” written at the top. Underneath it was scribbles and notes of different chords and chord progressions, as if he were trying to figure out what tune to use for the song. “How long have you been here?” Min heard the tired voice of Yoongi say, slightly startling her. “Just a minute or so…” she replied, turning to look at him.
He sat up on the couch and stretched his arms high above his head, yawning as he did so. He progressed to standing up, stretching his whole body as he woke himself up. “I see you still haven’t figured ‘Seesaw’ yet,” Min commented, looking back over at his yellow legal pad. Yoongi shook his head. “I’m nearly finished with producing all the other songs on the album, so my time of procrastination is over,” he said, looking over at his notes. “So that’s what I was going to work on tonight,” he said. Min got up from his chair, allowing him to sit down, and she sat down on the couch, setting her purse down next to her.
She felt her phone vibrating, as she was receiving a call from Jimin. “Hey,” she answered. “Min-ah! Are you still at BigHit?” he asked, getting straight to the point. “Yeah… I’m in Genius Lab now… why? What’s up?” she replied, wondering what his sudden question was about. “As I was leaving the convenience store, I saw on the news that there is a warning for a large typhoon that is supposed to hit us soon… and it’s supposed to stick around through the night,” Jimin explained. “Wait, forreal?” Min asked. “Yeah… and it’s starting to rain pretty hard already… do you think you could stick around there for the night? I don’t want you to travel through the typhoon to get home,” he said.
Min looked over at Yoongi and asked, “there’s a typhoon coming through tonight… would it be ok if I stayed here with you?” He shrugged, acting indifferent. “Do what you want,” he replied, simply. “Yoongi seems fine having an overnight guest… are you fine with me being alone with him all night?” Min asked, knowing that her boyfriend easily got jealous. “Of course! Don’t be stupid! I care about your safety first, Min… and besides, I’ve been to Genius Lab once… it’s definitely not built to be a chick magnet,” Jimin said with a laugh. Min chuckled. “Ok… well, let me know as soon as you get back to the dorm safely, ok?? I love you, Jiminie,” she said. “I will… love you too,” he replied before hanging up.
“Well… sounds like you’re stuck with me for the rest of the night,” Min said, pulling up the weather app on her phone and checking the hourly rate. “100% storms until around 7 AM,” she said. In reply, Yoongi’s stomach growled. “Well, since you’re here for the long haul, we might as well grab some food,” he said, getting up from his seat. “Sounds good… I’m starving,” Min replied, thinking about her original plans of eating a late supper at the dorm with Jimin. “Oh… I bet Mun is worried about the storm… I better text her,” Min said as she followed Yoongi out of the studio.
“I think I remember Jin-hyung saying that tonight was their cooking date night thingy that they do,” Yoongi said as they approached the elevator. Min smiled as she typed out her message to her sister. “Well if she’s with him, she’ll be just fine,” she said, knowing how terrified of storms her sister could be. They rode the elevator down to the third floor, where the dining facilities were. “I think I’m just feeling some kimbap today,” Min said, going up to the counter and placing her order. Yoongi placed his order as well, and once the food was ready, they brought it back up to Genius Lab.
The pair sat down, with Min in the couch and Yoongi in his chair, and ate their food from the to-go boxes they got from the cafeteria. “So you said you’re not making any progress on ‘Seesaw’?” Min asked as they ate. He shrugged. “Not really… nothing has jumped out at me yet,” he replied. “I think you have a good start there, though,” Min said, pointing over at his notepad. “The F minor key is already a great idea…” she added. “I can’t seem to get a good progression for the chords down,” he replied, setting his food down on his desk and swiveling towards the keyboard. He played an Fm, then C, then Ab, and Eb.
“Why don’t you try starting on like… a Db?” Min suggested, after taking a moment to think about what would sound good. “Hmm,” Yoongi said, playing a Db, then walking up to an Eb, then the Fm. “That may actually work for the intro…” he said, giving it more thought. He repeated the chords in a slow progression, then landed on a C before repeating the chords, this time landing on an Eb. “I like that, actually,” he said, reaching over for his yellow notepad and scribbling some notes on it. Mon continued to eat as she listened to Yoongi mess around with other chords, and writing down notes as he played.
“Ok, how is this?” he asked, playing a slightly slow progression of chords, switching them up just as soon as Min thought she could predict the pattern. “What??? How did you come up with that all on the spot?” Min asked, already digging the tune. “Because you told me what to do,” he said. “Literally all I told you was to try and start on a Db!! The rest was all you, Mr. Genius Lab!!” Min said, laughing. Yoongi played through his long chord progression again, and grinned at the result. Without saying anything, he plugged in his keyboard to his computer, playing it through again one more time so that he could mess with it on the digital platform.
He logged into his computer and formatted the keys that he had just played into MIDI. Min finished eating her kimbap, watching Yoongi do his thing from behind. His studio was called “Genius Lab” for a reason. “I think it would sound better as a synth…” Yoongi said, slightly under his breath as he rearranged the length of the chords and tested out several different sounds to it. Once he settled on one, he played it through, closing his eyes as they listened to it.
Min felt her phone vibrate, and she noticed she was receiving a call from her boyfriend. “Hey, did you make it to the dorm safely?” Min asked as soon as she answered the phone. “Yes! But just barely. I could see the storm following as the bus drove, and nearly as soon as I entered the building, the wind and downpour became so much worse!” Jimin said. “Well, I’m glad I’m indoors, then,” Min said, relieved Jimin was home safely.
“How are things going there?” Jimin asked as he slipped his shoes off and hung up his wet jacket. “It’s going well! You know how it is… just watching Min Suga work on a new song,” she said. “Did you get something to eat?” he then asked. “Oh definitely… you know how much I need food after dancing for that long!! The kimbap in the cafeteria was actually so good today… but maybe that’s just because I was extra hungry…” Min rambled, suddenly stopping herself when she noticed Yoongi had paused his music and was sitting, looking at her with his hands folded in his lap, as if patiently waiting.
“Oh… he’s giving me the look… I’ll text you, ok?” Min asked Jimin, causing him to chuckle. “Sounds good… I love you,” Jimin replied. “Love you too, Jiminie,” Min said before hanging up the phone. Nearly as soon as she hung up, Yoongi turned back to his computer and played the music again. “Genius Lab is for music, not for being all lovey and sentimental with your boyfriend,” Yoongi said, focusing on his computer. “Oh, please… Min Suga, one day you are going to meet a woman who will sweep you off your feet and you won’t be able to help but be all lovey towards her!” Min said with a laugh. “I’d like to see her try,” he said in an unamused tone.
Min rolled her eyes, then began to re-focus on the music. “Don’t you think it’s a bit slow?” Min asked. Yoongi nodded. “I was thinking the same thing… but we can use this as the background filler, and overlay a faster-tempo progression over it,” he said, swiveling back around to his keyboard. With the background filler playing on repeat, Yoongi began playing random keys, trying to find a good rhythm and melody to go with it. “Oh!! That was good… like the dum da da da da dum…” Min sung part of the tune he had played.
“Oh,” Yoongi said, simply. He knew which part of his random playing she was referring to and began to play the notes in a steady rhythm, switching the chords as the backtrack synth did. “Yes!! That sounds so good! I like it!!” Min commented, already loving it. Yoongi switched the tone of his keyboard to a soft synth that complimented the backtrack. “I think I like it, too,” he replied, uploading the MIDI to his computer so he could further edit and refine it.
The duo continued to add more and more things to the track, with Min giving Yoongi suggestions, and him taking them to a whole new level as he added layers to the backtrack, making the song sound fuller and more refined as they went along. Min did her fair share of adjusting the MIDI notes whenever Yoongi took a bathroom break, and time seemed to fly as they collaborated. They went back and forth between sitting in a comfortable silence as they worked and chatting each other’s ears off… though their conversation rarely strayed away from the subject of music.
Min stood up after sitting for… who even knows how long… and stretched, yawning as she did so. “Oh my goodness… I think I need some coffee! I’m going to go down to the cafeteria and get some… do you want anything?” she asked Yoongi. “Well, the cafeteria doesn’t open for another hour,” he said. Min looked at him, puzzled. “What? What… what time is it?” she asked. Yoongi turned and looked at his computer. “4:48am…” he replied, matter-of-factly. “4:48AM??” Min asked, shocked. She pulled out her phone and realized it really was almost 5 in the morning.
“Have we been working on this literally through the night?” Min asked. Yoongi laughed at how surprised she was. “Now you know how I’m able to spend so many nights just working on music… the ideas really flow through the night,” Yoongi said. “I literally didn’t notice… Jimin was texting me the whole time too! Though… I guess he does have his fair share of all-nighters now that I think about it,” Min said with a chuckle. “Well… I definitely need some coffee now…” she added.
“I usually use the coffee machine in the break room, since the cafeteria is closed… and I’ll take a cup too, if it’s not too much trouble,” Yoongi said. Min nodded. “Two cups of coffee coming right up,” she said, slipping on her slides and exiting Genius Lab. She walked down the hall to the elevator, and as she did so, she noticed an overall calmness in the air… there were no staff bustling through the hallways like during the day. It was nice. She heard an occasional noise from inside some of the other studios she passed, but overall, it was silent.
She took the elevator to the practice rooms floor and found the coffee machine in the breakroom. She brewed two cups of coffee before heading back up to Genius Lab, where she found Yoongi still sitting at his computer. “I think it’s done,” he said, taking the coffee that Min handed him. “Ok, let’s hear it,” she said, sitting back down on the couch and taking a sip of her own coffee. Yoongi hit play, and the quiet sounds of nature that they added in the beginning started to play, followed by the easing in of the synth and melodic rhythm they came up with.
When the song came to an end, Min couldn’t help but grin from ear-to-ear. “It’s perfect…” she said, smiling over at her friend. “Ehhh, I wouldn’t say ‘perfect,’ but it’s definitely a good start,” Yoongi said, downloading the completed file onto a flash drive, titling the file “SEESAW_DEMO-1.” “I’m going to run it by Slow Rabbit later today… he’ll have good insight on what to change with it,” Yoongi said. “I lowkey hope he doesn’t change it that much… I feel like I actually may have contributed a brain cell to this project!!” Min said.
Yoongi chuckled. “You contributed much more than just a brain cell! Your entire night was devoted to this demo! I’ll make sure your contributions make it into the final song,” he said. “In fact… How would you feel about maybe lending your vocals?” he asked. “My vocals in a Min Suga solo song? I don’t think they would fit very well with your style, would it?” Min asked, skeptically, though really she was just terribly nervous at the thought.
“It’ll be my style still… but I’ll write it in a way that would allow your vocals to be included in it,” Yoongi replied. Min gave it some more thought. Though she was nervous, it wasn’t every day that Prod. Suga asked someone to feature in one of his tracks. “Ok… only if I’m not acknowledged on the song credits,” she said. “I wasn’t planning on giving you any of the credit anyways… since you only contributed one brain cell,” Yoongi said with a smirk. Min laughed and rolled her eyes. “Min Yoongi… how did I just manage to survive the entire night with you?” she asked, taking a sip of her coffee.
