im sure there's already name for this but;
the seesaw effect was something I coined to summarize the human experience of being presented with something that challenges they way you thought and from there having two options, see or saw. I know that sounds way to simple to warrent its own 'effect' name but please let me explain. its a person given a moment to veer in two wildly different directions philosophically when presented with an addition to the idea of something they hate; they can decide that because they like the addition that the thing they hate must not be that bad after all , or decide that they hate this thing so much that if the added thing really is associated with the thing they hate then they must hate the addition too, doubling down on the hate.
i know thats still kinda confusing so let me give some examples:
a child hates vegetables but likes mashed potatoes. their parents in an effort to help their child hates veggies less explains that potatoes are actually a vegetable too! the kid can SEE ( decide maybe they don't hate all vegetables and are willing to make some exceptions) or SAW (they are betrayed by the potatoes and their parents and start refusing to eat potatoes as well out of principle!)
your homophobic uncle loves queen , so you explain that queen was actually gay ! from this he can SEE ("oh well if queen was queer then maybe I've been selling queer people short, maybe their music is good at least") or SAW ("well I always thought his music was kinda derivitave anyway")
