Kids are inherently good, and nothing will convince me otherwise. My next door neighbors are fostering with the intention of adopting this really sweet little girl. She has some difficulties with attachment, but the family is working through it. She really is a happy kid, and she is super excitable. Whenever I see her, I say hi, and I ask her what she did in school or what she’s up to when I have the time to chat. She has only been in the house next door for about a month and a half, and she has made friends with all of the neighbor kids on the block. Today, I was gardening when their car pulled up. She had toy doctor kit with her, and she pretended to give me a shot and listen to my heart. Then, she gave me a couple of stickers. I handed her a basil flower (she likes flowers); I was getting rid of a bunch of them. She ran inside the house, full of joy. I could her explaining to my neighbor that she wanted to give ME something in return. I heard my neighbor asking “Are you SURE you want to give her *this*?” I heard a small and excited, “Yes!” She ran back outside with this purple pen flower. I thanked her. I told her how thoughtful it was for her to give me this. She ran back inside to put her doctor kit away when my neighbor pulled me aside. It turns out that this pen flower is super special. It was the last thing this kid’s biological mother gave to her. I immediately let her know that I’d give it back to her. My neighbor, with hope in her voice, told me that it is a good sign and means that the kid is letting go of her old life. TL:DR: I gave the neighbors’ prospective adoptive child a small flower I was about to get rid of, and the kid was so happy that she gave me the last remaining piece of her biological mother.
