Funny 69: Dog Food Tester
Having heard a rumour that dog food testers are humans that taste dog food, I did some further investigation and came across an article on this website:
http://www.careersearch.com/dog-food-tester/
which provides more information on the vocation. The whole article is funny - they had plenty of material to work with, because the idea that a human would be better placed to test dog food than, oh I don't know, a pack of dogs, is already ridiculous and farcical and sounds like someone made it up.
My favourite bit is this bit:
'Career Training and Qualifications:
The qualifications for this job are uniquely narrow. In short, one needs to be willing to eat dog food.'
Hahahahaha. Here's what I think makes it funny:
Joke answer to a generic question. Even though the writers of the website made the questions and the answers themselves, it has the same kind of funny as those funny answers kids give in school to test questions. I think the funny is in the contrast and thwarted expectations because generic questions generally generate generic answers.
Stretching the meaning of 'qualification'. I think stretched meanings are often funny. For example, during one of those butch/femme conversations, a friend asked my other friend whether she ever has penetrative sex and she said, "I had a smear last month. Does that count?". Obviously nobody counts a smear test as sex so it's kind of facetious as well, but it's also a funny meaning stretch. It's a funny way of demonstrating how little penetrative sex she has, that she would even consider a speculum inside her in a medical setting as sex. Another example is one of my friend's mothers who once complained to me that her husband never cooked, detailing: "Unless you count that time when he came in and opened a tin of beans for me because the tin opener was playing up." This is a funny way of demonstrating how little her husband cooks, that she would even consider counting a time when he assisted her in opening a tin. Here the stretch kind of demonstrates how little the conditions for being a dog food tester collaborate with any traditional kind of qualifications, the only qualification being the willingness to eat dog food.
The willingness to eat dog food. A willingness to eat dog food is kind of gross funny.
Formal language to describe a joke. 'Uniquely narrow' and 'one needs' are the kind of terms you might get in an academic journal or a serious newspaper article. I don't think this is funnier than any of the alternatives (it's still funny to say 'you have to eat dogfood lol') but it's a particular kind of comedy I've definitely come across before. One example I can think of is this story my friend told me about how one time she came to London with her mum and her mum lost one of her high heeled shoes whilst stepping off the tube. The station manager couldn't retrieve the shoe straightaway so they went to a shoe shop. Her mother was very serious about the whole thing, and so were the shoe shop assistants. They asked her mother if she would like to wear her new shoes out of the store and she said yes. Then they asked her, "And would Madam like me to put her other shoe in the box?" referring to the single shoe she was currently wearing. 'Would Madam' is pretty formal for a shoe shop (although I think it was quite a fancy shoe shop) and the formality of the phrase is in contrast to the clearly funny situation.
WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER WHEN YOU ARE IN A BAD MOOD?
[Lazy linework is lazy. Gimme a break, it's late and this isn't a real ask. I'll be answering most of my asks with this style, but if it's ~SPESHUL~, I'll whip up something good. I can draw hands better than that, I just spazzed them on.]
- What do you honestly see in me?
