Fic Recs as told by my AO3 History (No longer between me and God!)
The recs will be under the cut. Mostly Buddie, some general, some Madney stuff. All 9-1-1 fandom fics for the sake of clarity. I'm thinking about making this a series so I can spread the Christmas cheer. Let me know what you think about that in my askbox or reply to this! Feel free to share recs with me so I can leave more comments this season.
I've put the Tumblr names of those I know, but if you find someone I don't have tagged, feel free to tag them!
saintsnames' lucas diaz christmas collection (if you're looking to get into the holiday spirit with a glorious amount of kid fic and older Christopher Diaz, this is the one for you. Bonus stars for their dog!!!!)
SpenceFletcher's (@speeeenc) DOGFIGHT! (I may be biased because it's my best friend's first 9-1-1 fic but fr they've put so much effort into this unique take on the fight club era.)
K_Raven_01 is writing even in the darkest of winters, March brings hope (This fic just started but it's got such an amazing premise that I had to recommend it to everyone because YES! And did I mention the author speaks a different language than English primarily and is still THIS good?)
(@thatonemaddieanon) Mads' Little Maddie universe (Getting to know this author has been such fun this holiday season! And helping create the Little!Maddie universe, too. You should definitely check this out if you like Non Sexual Age Regression fics!!!)
CandysPandemonium writes Landslide!!!! (This fic. What to say about this fic that I haven't already blabbed about in the comments? The author is doing their level best to devastate me on a weekly basis and it is WORKING!!!!)
lifewithferg's 118 Job series -- (oh my god where do i start? 118 team as thieves. Oh my God and the Madney of it all??? Jesus Christ I love you lifewithferg you are my hero 12/10 no notes)
Jedi_Knight_Willia is writing the Marry Me AU called On My Way To You and I think that's amazingly clever (It's a unique enough twist on the movie that keeps me reading and I love how awesome they are developing the characters that stays true to both the Marry Me movie and 9-1-1 canon!)
tomatosoupforthesoul came out with this devastating AU called He's Your Kid, So He's My Family. (if you're into angst with a happy ending, this is the fic for you. I promise the ending is happy but it's so true to the characters. Buck's devastation at not being a match paired with the determination of Maddie checking despite not being asked to??? Flawless.)

This is what I'm considering Part 2 of When 'Miss Independent' Can't be Independent
It's much less explicit in sickfic-iness than I like to post, but I'm starting some plots!
These two fics are basically the set up for every long term plot that I have planned right now, so kind of a must-read if you want to follow the plot
Welcome to some general angst, anxiety, and caretaking!

COLIN:Â
âItâs just so frustrating,â Colin complains, sitting next to a curled-up Julie on the couch. Roywn pauses on his way past the living room, and asks, âWhatâs frustrating?â
Colin sighs, explaining, âIâm just so tired of everyone thinking me and Jules are dating. Like, is it that unusual for a male and female to be friends?!â
Rowyn frowns, crossing his arms, âPeople said that?â
âYeah, I mustâve had three people today calling her my girlfriend.â
Julie chuckles quietly, and heâs glad that she finds it amusing at least. Probably because the idea of them dating is just so absurd. Heâs gay, sheâs lesbian, itâs not even possible. But still, thatâs the assumption, and it drives him crazy sometimes.
Rowyn, however, does not seem to find it amusing, his frown more like a glare now as his mouth turns down more.
Julie nudges Colin with her foot, and he glances at her to find her smirking at him, âIf I was straight, Iâd date you.â
âYouâd try,â he jokes, âSorry Julie, Iâve only got eyes for Ro,â he laughs, glancing at his boyfriend, only for him to scoff, and leave the room. Colin frowns after him, not sure whatâs wrong.
âHe really doesnât like me, does he?â Julie asks, still sounding amused.
âEh, I donât know. People tend to grow on him, but I canât understand why he wouldnât like you. If anyone would appreciate your honesty, it would be him.â
Julie just shrugs, leaning back against the cushions. Colin falls silent too, thinking about Rowynâs odd grudge against Julie, but ultimately decides that if Rowyn has a problem, heâll share it.
He looks then at Julie, carefully observing her. Heâs relieved to see she has more colour in her cheeks, and she looks less feverish than before. Sheâs been able to drink water without throwing up, so heâs pretty confident in saying sheâs on the mend.
------
CHARLIE:
âColin?â says Charlie shakily, holding onto the doorframe and still feeling unsteady. He glances over at her, then jumps to his feet, and hurries over.
âCharlie? Hey, whatâs going on?â he says soothingly, taking her elbow and leading her to the kitchen table. She slumps into a chair, and then leans on the table, her head sitting heavily in the palm of her hand.
âIâm low,â she says, gesturing to the blood sugar test sitting on the table, and reading 3.8. Itâs not too bad, but definitely explains the shakiness and discomfort.
âOkay, thatâs okay.â Colin assesses her a little more carefully, but ultimately decides sheâs aware enough not to require emergency measures. She watches him grab a juice box from the pantry and slide the straw in, before passing it to her. She sips it slowly, letting the bright flavour swirl around her tongue.
She unlocks her phone, going to her most visited app, checking her blood sugar. She groans when it doesnât match the low reading she got. As she expected.
She shows Colin the reading from her phone, and he looks at her, confused.
âForgot to change it today,â she explains, âThaâs why it didnât catch the low.â
Charlie takes another drink of her juice, as Colin goes to her cubby in the entryway.
âYou have a new one in your bag, right?â he calls back, and she hums an affirmative. He returns with her cute crossbody bag that she takes with her everywhere. He rifles around until he finds the small package with a continuous glucose monitor.
He pulls out an alcohol swab, passing both to her, and she sighs before beginning the process. The juice is helping to clear her head enough that she can properly attach it, giving a small wince as the reader slides into her skin.
Sheâs relieved when it calibrates with her phone, and after another few minutes, the reading she gets shows a slight improvement from the sugar. Colin passes her a pouch of gummies, and she smiles. Her fingers fumble to open it, before bringing one to her mouth. With her snack, she feels the weight of the low lifting.
âThanks,â she says to Colin, and he smiles at her gently, before saying âCâmon,â and leading her to the living room.
He sets her up on the couch, in his previous spot, meaning sheâs curled up by Julieâs feet.
âThere, both my patients in one spot,â he jokes, passing her the remaining gummies. When she next shows him her sugar levels, they are almost back to normal.
------
JAMIE:Â
âAh, shoot, shoot, shoot!â Jamie exclaims, rushing from his room, down the hall, and to the front door.
âWhatâs up?â asks Colin, sounding kind of tired. (Really, heâs just hoping there isnât another emergency tonight)
âForgot I had plans with Keegan, heâs waiting for me. Stupid brain forgot to remind me, and I forgot to set an alarm.â
âOh, whoops. Well, have fun!â
Jamie hurries out of the flat, shoes on his feet, bag in his hand, and jacket slung over his arm. While heâs driving, he realizes he forgot to grab a book. Itâs too late to turn around now, and even so, itâs kind of ridiculous to turn around for a book that he probably wonât even read because heâs going to be talking to Keegan.
When he gets out of the car, he sees Keegan standing at the edge of the park, looking so handsome in his neat dark blue button-up. Jamie hurries towards him, apology ready, but Keegan just smiles and holds out his hand.
Jamie melts, and takes it, and they walk through the park together.
âSo what book did you bring tonight?â asks Keegan eventually.
âUm, actually, I forgot one tonight. I was kind of in a hurry because I forgot about this, and ran out the door without grabbing one.â Jamie feels that little wrong-ness, that he doesnât have a book in his bag, or his hand, and itâs just one more thing to throw tonight out of balance.
âWow, I donât think Iâve seen you without a book the entire time Iâve known you!â Keegan exclaims.
âUh huh,â is Jamieâs noncommittal answer.
Keegan tugs him to a stop. âAre you okay?â he asks gently, examining Jamieâs face, but he wonât meet his eyes.
âYeah,â Jamie sighs, âIâm sorry I forgot about our plans. I didnât mean to make you wait.â
Keegan smiles at him softly, the hand not connected to Jamieâs reaching up to play with the collar of his sweater.
âI know you didnât, bookworm. Itâs okay, I promise Iâm not upset, and I didnât mind waiting, itâs such a lovely night.â
Jamie releases some tension, finally paying attention to his surroundings, and focusing on his boyfriend, deciding to ignore the weird parts of the night, and live in the moment.
------
KEEGAN:Â
Having returned from his date with Jamie, with Jamie, Keegan falls onto the couch, while Jamie hesitates for a minute before going into Keeganâs room and returning with a book. Keegan laughs, and Jamie smiles sheepishly, joining him on the couch.
Soon, Alix emerges from his art room, hair messily pulled back, and hands dotted with paint. Jayden returns home shortly after a psych lecture, and he puts his bag down at his desk, before dropping into the maroon chair. Alix immediately drops onto his lap, and they curl up together, Jayden dropping his face into Alixâs hair, as he relaxes.
Friendly conversation soon turns serious, as Keegan quietly says, âSometimes I forget why I want to be a high school teacher.â The others turn towards him, Alix sympathetic, Jayden worried, and Jamie confused.
âWhat do you mean?â
âI⊠you should have seen my class today. I forget how awful high school culture can be.â
âWhat happened?â asks Jamie quietly, as Jayden and Alix exchange a glance.
âWe were doing mini-presentations today, and most of them went well, but there was one group that was just so nervous, but the lack of general respect and kindness is crazy. So many kids were on their phones, or talking to each other, and as they were leaving the room, they were being so harsh. Sometimes itâs hard to imagine dealing with that every day.â
âI guess. But remember, youâre doing it for the other kids,â Jamie reminds him gently.
Keegan just plays with Jamieâs fingers, looking at his hands.
âKey,â Jayden starts, and Keegan looks up at the sound of his voice, meeting his eyes, âYouâre doing it for that group, the one that was nervous but did the presentation anyway. Youâre doing it for the kids like us, who needed a supportive adult and didnât have one. Youâre doing it for the kids who fall through the cracks.â
Alix interjects, âItâs because you care. And you love books, and talking about books, and connecting with students that are similarly nuts, because youâre weird that way.â
Keegan laughs a little, eyes softening and he relaxes again, reminded of what matters. It doesnât matter if he canât help everyone, but if he can help someone, a kid like him, or Jay, or Lex, then heâll be doing something important, something good. Heâll be able to turn his past into a superpower.
------
ALIX:
After a little while, Jamie leaves, kissing Keegan goodbye, and heading home. Seeing Jamie just seems to soften Keegan. He becomes rounded at the edges, sweeter in his words and his mannerisms. Itâs a beautiful thing, those early stages of love.
Alix always likes to see Keegan turn into a puddle when Jamieâs around. Itâs so different from the sharp-edged sarcastic friend that he fell in love with many years ago. Not a bad difference, just another side to him that Jamie is able to bring out.
Thatâs what really reassured Alix that Jamie is the right person for Keegan. They know Jayâs not quite convinced yet, but thatâs just because he needs to see the commitment and the intensity enough to accept him properly. And because he can be overprotective sometimes, but thatâs just because heâs loyal. And anxious.
Alix brings one of his pieces to the living room. They donât normally bring their artwork out of their work room, but they need a change of scenery. So he lays down a cloth on the floor, and sets up his little easel and the piece of wood he was working on, bringing a palette, and some brushes. He needs something to clear his head, and nothing does that better than attacking a piece of wood with colour.
He takes a deep breath, and slowly releases some tension from the day, and then plunges a brush into the deep blue, and harshly strokes it across the wood, watching in satisfaction as it streaks from his brush.
âWhat are you working on, Lex?â asks Jay, glancing over his shoulder.
âI dunno. Nothing real,â they say, frowning at the wood as they add a swoosh of vibrant fuschia, then a dot of muted pink.
âOh, I donât know. I think your abstract works are some of your most emotionally real pieces, love.â
Alix grins, looking back at the mess of colours on this random plank of wood he found in the alley behind their building. Maybe thatâs true.
Jayden settles back into his place on the chair, with a good view of Alixâs art. He doesnât usually see the process, just the end result.
Alix prods the wood with his brush, leaving a trail of soft blue dots, tongue poking out in concentration.
The two chat as Alix continues to add broad brushstrokes, and fine details, contrasting blues, pinks, and yellows. He highlights the wood grain in some spots, and in others uses the rougher texture to add dimension.
They finish by adding dramatic thin lines and small dots of gold and black, accenting and highlighting all at once. When he finishes, he proclaims, âThis is how Key looks at Jamie.â
------
ROWYN:
âSo⊠I guess Colin thinks I need to give you another chance.â
âWell, donât do me any favours.â
âIâm not. Iâm doing Colin a favour.â
âFine. What do you want to know?â
Here they fall silent. Neither is sure how to make this relationship possible, though they both know for Colinâs sake they should put in a bit more effort.
Rowyn doesnât know what to think of Julie. From what he can tell, she is cocky, judgemental, and self-righteous. But Colin says sheâs confident, independent, and honest. Really, those are just synonyms, but the connotations are different.
So how does he figure it out? Thereâs no logic to getting to know people, thereâs no clear steps, especially when the person you want to get to know doesnât really care about societyâs rules.
Then again, he stopped caring about many societal expectations years ago. Including everything his family wanted for him and thought he should be.
Anyway, back to the situation at hand. He knows her major already (they share an interest in medicine). He knows sheâs known Colin longer than he has (and he might resent her for it, in the small illogical part of his brain), and that they work together, obviously.
Oh, and he knows that people often mistake them for a couple, rather than a couple of friends.
Julie finally scoffs, and says, âAs far as I can tell, you donât have any interest in knowing me, despite the fact that I know Colin better than most people.â
And maybe thatâs whatâs throwing Rowyn off. The fact that Julie does know Colin, can maybe read him better than Rowyn can. Thatâs not true, though, because Rowyn understands Colin, and what they have is deeper.
------
JULIE:
Julieâs getting really sick of all these conversations, and meeting new people. She closes her eyes to try, or at least pretend, to sleep. It doesnât last long.
Colin swaps places with his boyfriend, raising a curious, but hopeful, eyebrow. He obviously wants them to be getting along, and Julie would try, if Rowyn would. But alas, Rowyn seems to have a grudge against her, and sheâs not one for trying to please people. Well, not anymore.
âSo Jules. Iâve been wondering. Why didnât you call me? Not just this morning, but last night, when you were sick? You know I'd've come.â
âI didnât need help, I would have been fine.â
âYouâre so full of shit. You needed help,â he says firmly, âEspecially when your roommate is fucking Ashley.â
âIâŠâ she scrambles for something to say, but draws a blank. Everything seems like a flimsy excuse, thereâs nothing she can say to hide the well of emotions. Some things are just too raw for words.
âI forgot you might care enough to help,â she finally whispers, sounding so unlike herself, too much like her old self.
âOh. Shit, this is because of her? I didnât actually think about that.â
âI guess, maybe. Good old Dani -shit, Danica- sheâŠâ
Julie closes her eyes, the intensity of Danica flooding back to her, the manipulation, the lies, the twisting her words, making her seem dramatic. She was never sick with Danica, she was just messing up plans. She couldnât be sick, she was always making it up, making it a big deal.
âJules,â Colin calls, her eyes snapping forward as she looks at him, âWe got rid of her. You have people in your corner now.â
Julie scoffs. âWe got rid of her, but sheâs not gone. Ashleyâs leftover from that life, and clearly she knows it. You say Iâve got âpeopleâ in my corner, but I donât. I have you. Thatâs one person.â
âAnd your family, whom you actually like.â
âYeah, but thatâs because I donât really tell them anything real. Itâs just hard to make friends, especially with everything Iâm doing right now.â
âWell, look around. Thereâs people here. These are good people.â
âMaybe. Except Rowyn, I donât get that man at all.â
âI wish youâd give him another chance. Heâs a tough nut to crack, is all.â
When she doesnât answer, he reminds her, âItâll get better. I was there for you through all her shit, Iâm not going anywhere now. And you can always call me, Iâll always come.â
------
JAYDEN:
Jayden sits at his desk, tapping his pen on the table. Heâs supposed to be studying, but instead heâs staring blankly into space as his brain runs in circles.
He snaps out of the daze when Alix walks past, checking in with a quiet, âHey, you good?â
Jayden sighs, scrubbing his face with his hands as if to wipe the fogginess from his brain.
Alix comes up behind him, putting his hands on his shoulders, and squeezing gently. Just enough to ground him back to reality. They press a small kiss to the top of Jaydenâs head.
âIs your brain messing with you?â
âYeah,â he sighs.
âAnything you want to talk about?â
âNot really. Thereâs nothing you can do about it, just replaying the day, thinking about Key, remembering.â
âIâm always happy to listen if talking would help.â
âI know,â Jayden responds, but he wouldnât really know how to put it into words anyway. Not when his thoughts are rushing faster than he can identify them, when the emotion is more intense than the thoughts themselves.
And anyway, he wouldnât want the following conversation.
Instead, he gently pushes Alix off, and quietly says, âI think Iâm going to go to the pool for a while.â
Alix nods, âOkay. Swim hard enough that your brain forgets everything else.â
Jayden smiles, but his thoughts are still miles away.
Nothing a good swim canât solve.
He grabs his water bottle, and his swim bag, on his way out the door when Alix tugs him back for a soft kiss.
âLove you,â they tell him, their fond voice cutting through the anxiety and reassuring Jayden that they will always be in his corner.
------
MAX:
Max isnât sure what to think about Julie. Sheâs a little more intense than theyâre used to, but they can tell how much Colin cares for her, so theyâre pretty sure sheâll be around more often.
In the living room, they find a spot on the couch next to Charlie, and she snuggles into their side. They smile at her, and listen to Julieâs conversation with Rowyn, trying not to laugh at their obvious disconnection.
Rowynâs convinced himself of something, Max just canât tell what it is.
Theyâre trying to connect the dots that Rowyn clearly has already, when they get a text.
Leo: Hey, what are you up to? Would you like to talk for a bit?
Max smiles, and Charlie glances at their phone.
âOoh, whoâs Leo?â she asks, then pauses, âWait, is he your coworker-friend?â
âYeah,â Max answers, typing back an answer. Theyâve only recently expanded their relationship to friends, but theyâre loving their interactions. Thereâs a lot about Leo they didnât know, despite working closely together for two years.
They slide from their spot on the couch, hurrying to their room, and pressing the FaceTime button, waiting for it to connect.
Leoâs smiling face and bright blue hair fills the screen, and they grin back.
They talk work for a while, before the topic turns towards general life, and the drama in the flat, and inevitably, Leoâs health comes up after a while, and Max brings the conversation to a crashing halt when they offhandedly say, âIâll let you go then, let you get some rest.â
Leo immediately frowns, the heavy pause in conversation telling that that wasnât the right thing to say. After a moment, Leo relaxes, though his expression now carries a guarded quality, as he says, âNope, nuh uh, I called you, donât leave because of me.â
âOkay. Yeah, thatâs fair,â answers Max softly, burning with the quiet shame of having said the wrong thing. When it seems as if Leoâs waiting for them to make the next move, they say the first thing that comes to mind, âSo⊠When do I get to meet your siblings?â
âHey, you want to meet Max?â he calls to his sister.
âOh, did you finally make a friend? Wait, isnât he your coworker?â
âThey,â corrects Leo, and when she just raises an eyebrow at him, he explains, âMax uses âthey/themâ pronouns, Ray.â
âOh, right. Well, theyâre your coworker, right? That doesnât even count,â she mutters to herself.
He rolls his eyes at her, and he can see Max smiling from his phone.
âCourse it counts. Iâm just glad to be talking to someone outside this family,â he playfully snaps back.
He wavers for a moment, legs threatening to fail at their job, and he leans a little more heavily on the cane in his left hand, making his way to the edge of her bed and dropping down. The cane clatters to the floor, but heâll deal with that later.
âYep, I got the fashion genes in this family,â she quips.
Leo gives her a gentle push from his spot, then his fingers go back to prodding at his hip, trying to push feeling back into his leg.
Ollie comes bounding into the room, yapping away, and he climbs onto the bed too, leaning over to see Max on the phone.
Leo smiles, Ollie curling up next to him, and for the next while, the room is filled with the sounds of the three most important people in his life.

BONUS:
The flat has settled into quiet, everyone hidden away in their rooms, quiet enough that most would be asleep. So begins the best part of the night.
Apple stretches, arching her back and yawning, showing her small pointed teeth.
She hops down from her spot on the couch, landing with a near-silent thwap on the ground. Her tail swishes as she observes her territory.
All feels normal, except for the strange woman on the couch, who reeks of illness. Apple pads forward silently, nose twitching as she examines the scene. The only logical thing for her to do, is to leap onto the couch, sniffing carefully.
Her whiskerâs twitch as they accidentally touch the strangerâs face. When the woman shifts, Apple startles, bounding away again. A small flick of her tail shows her amusement at the situation.
She continues her prowl, thoroughly checking her territory. First, she has a snack, purposefully marching to her food bowl, and crunching down some familiar pellets. Hunger satisfied, she then must satisfy her curiosity.
She leaps onto the counter, where she knows sheâs not supposed to go, but she always likes to be a little bit bad. Sheâs disappointed to find a lid on the butter, and no good midnight snacks left out for a small cat like her.
She pauses for a minute by the front door, tingling with the knowledge that somethingâs out of place⊠the shoes. Thereâs a new pair that matches the womanâs scent. She sniffs them once more to confirm, then continues her prowl.
Next, she finds a bag. A bag! Apple loves all bags, boxes, and drawers, so she happily sticks her head into the bag, followed by her front paws as she wiggles forward. Before she can climb all the way in, the bag overbalances, and sheâs tipped out, the contents similarly scattering across the floor. She bounces back onto her feet and chases after a pencil that rolled away.
When she decides sheâs bored of that game, she finishes her tour of the territory by checking on all of her humans. She follows the familiar routes through the hallway, nudging at each door she passes with her paw. The doors that creak open let her wander in, and while she could investigate their desks, play with whatever she finds, and cause general mischief, tonight sheâs craving some good cuddles.
She finds the human who never sleeps, and pushes her way into his face. He murmurs to her, scratching her ears and she pushes harder into his hand until he finds just the right spot.
She doesnât settle with him though. Instead, Apple gets her fill of pets, then promptly leaves the room, going to her human. The human male who sheâs unhealthily attached to. She knows the door will be open, and she trots into his room, bounds onto his bed, and curls up between his legs, in that spot that she fits perfectly.

Marinette just wants to live her Special Agent life as quietly as possible. Put bad guys behind bars, maybe make friends with three people at work, and eat pizza once they close a case.
What makes its way into her life is a mop of blond hair with a stunning smile and too much of a back-talking mouth to be healthy for her.
"It's an good AU concept with fun dynamics, and it's a short, easy read! Detective Marinette and her team of four being Alya, Nino and Kagami. There's so much room for sequels if the author chooses to!"

Felix looks at his cousin, sometimes. Looks and wonders. The silver ring heâd taken to wearing a couple of years ago is gone.
But the Adrien heâs known since childhood isnât there either, and, much as Felix would like to attribute the tapping heâs noticed his fingers do every time Adrien doesnât answer one of his questions to annoyance, he knows itâs truly because he feels unnerved by it all.
"It's a lovely exploration in Felix's character and his feelings toward Adrien while absolutely teasing a glorious plot about Adrien, Marinette, and Gabriel"

Ever since Nino's (frankly embarrassing) akumatization into Rocketear, Chat Noir's behavior had taken a strange and sudden turn in the presence of Carapace, and Nino could only think of one possible explanation:
Chat Noir hated him.
Somehow, Adrien didn't seem to agree.
"Any fic that focuses on Nino and Adrien being bffs is important. After Rocketear, Nino may have rambled a bit to Adrien about how weird it's been being around Chat Noir. Adrien is weirdly invested in this problem. A lot of misunderstanding leads to heightened emotions and eventual revelations. Just a really good examination of the difficulties of secret identities and being best friends."

For Fei, escaping her past is as difficult as trying to escape the Earthâs orbit.

Summary: As far as Natasha's aware, her plans for February 14th this year consist of running errands and lunch with her partner. Post-AoU, canon divergence in which Hulk did not sail off into the bowels of the cosmos.
Notes: You might be wondering why I'm posting a Valentine's Day fic in June. The answer is triple-pronged: (1) you all have been very patient, you deserve something light and sweet, (2) this is from a collection of unposted fics written 1-4 years ago that I decided to try and salvage instead of flinging into the bowels of the cosmos (where Bruce/Hulk didn't belong), and (3) because I want to, as Brucenat fans are always in need of more joy.

Nestled between some corporate office building and a rival residential complex, the refuge of her apartment awaited her. The quaint cafe across the street bursted with bodiesâmore so than any cafe within walking distance of Central Park did on a typical day. A few couples and families gradually dispersed from the Jewish center on the corner. Cars congested the street, their drivers extra impatient today, judging by the incessant cacophony of horns.
With a bag of pharmaceutical supplies slung over her wrist and two sandwiches from one of the many nearby delis tucked under her arm, she retrieved her apartment keys with swift hands and escaped the restless city streets. As always, out of a perpetual distrust and skepticism of elevators, she took the stairs up to her unitâs floor.
At the apex of her ascent, she emerged into the hallway to a chilled breeze. Someone opened the hallâs one window again. Probably the neighbor prone to triggering the fire alarm with kitchen misadventures that happened whenever the woman plucked up the courage to try some recipe from Pinterest. It happened about every other week, complete with the woman thrusting the window open in a frenzy that included a frantic fanning of her door and miscellaneous shouts that alternated between apology and insistence on everyone carrying about with their day like normal, as if there wasnât a tinnitus-inducing alarm screeching. Once the alarm stopped, her neighbor would retreat with a slam of her door and the hall window open, forgotten every time. It was a nuisance at most, but benign.
Today, despite it being the middle of February, the incoming air didnât have the sharpened teeth of a New York winter; it was tamer. It was crisp; it felt like something she could snap into pieces and scatter like ashes or seeds. It felt like, smelled like the kind of air not found in an American metropolis. The keenness, gentled to ribbons as it filtered through the screen, compelled her to sidestep from the stairwell door for a moment in appreciation.
...
The prolonged moment passed like time underwater. Before she crossed the threshold for overstaying in the hallway amidst reverie, she tucked the thoughts away, pushed off the wall, and approached her place. Her key glided into the lock, and then she into her apartment.
Handle in hand, door halfway closed, Natasha froze.
