Ā I am not an athletic person, so I have never paid much attention to sports related news because it just wasnāt relevant to me; however, after reading this very shocking article by Ruth Padawer, I believe it has changed somewhat. I must admit that reading some of the things mentioned in the article did make me pause and think about the cruelty and unfairness of it all. The I.A.A.F and the I.O.C have completely backwards and unethical methods when it comes to āgender-identifyingā women who seem to have more athletic capabilities than they should. Reading about the invasive exams, testing, and questioning these women went through was hard to imagine experiencing. It is absurd to think about having to present a certificate to prove if oneās gender really is what they say it is or carrying around a card like Veronica Brenner to show her āfemininityā as if a woman can only be measured correctly with that term. These groups went to the extreme lengths to perform these tests and I find it ridiculous that with more important things out there, why was there such a big speculation to gender test women simply because they were athletic and darn good at it? Was it so farfetched that a woman could be excellent at anything other than being a homebody that it required extensive testing and scrutiny? Maria Jose Martinez Patino was ruled completely female on the outside and even reported in having less testosterone than an average woman should. All the evidence the groups desired was there and it still wasnāt enough to prove Patino was āfemaleā enough. I also found interesting that poorer women who had great athletic ability were still subject to gender tests more so for the reasoning that if they did well, something must not be right. Most of the things the women were disqualified for was something no one can control. No one gets to pick their genetic makeup or what body parts they get so itās very unfair to discriminate against someone for something that wasnāt even their choice! Being scrutinized in the public eye and essentially having your identity and body being picked apart and judged impacted many of these womenās entire life and well being negatively. This article left me with a lot of questions like, who determines what is female, who set the guidelines of being female enough to participate in sports? These groups were probably so threatened that a woman could be better at something a man typically is, they just simply couldnāt believe it and set out to do everything imaginable to prove otherwise.
