Christine Jorgensen: On December 15th of 1952, a genderqueer fashion photographer named George Jorgensen underwent surgery by a danish surgeon, named Christian Hamburger, which transformed his genitals from appearing male to appearing female. The binary world was shocked, and Christine Jorgensen began her career as a lounge performer. Since this time the message has continued to be one in which genderqueer people are said to be born with a defect and mental malady, which should be "corrected" through medical intervention. This message leaves the modern "Trans Community" in exactly the same position that homosexuals fought to liberate themselves from at the dawn of the Gay liberation movement. It teaches young people that even questioning the gender roles that are dictated to them is tantamount to flirting with mental illness. It negates true equality. You can't get civil rights in an injection, and equality doesn't come on the end of a scalpel. As a genderqueer person myself, I beg my peers to embrace the idea that being born genderqueer is a gift. It's a state of being that puts you in a position outside of the stupidity of the war of the sexes. Be proud of who you are. You are perfect as you are. You are NOT sick, you were born into a sick culture. So long as we keep telling science that we are in need of a cure... they will work toward "curing" the future of genderqueer people. Stop sowing the seeds of our destruction. Be PROUD!...
