Ok, so interesting choice of words from Pearl in the second part of that explanation. Clearly there was some kind of war, either on Earth or near enough that the Gems fought with/against the shards that ended up here.
However...
“The Gems once created an army of these drones”
Not “Gems”, but “The Gems”... It’s almost like she’s distancing herself from the people go used these shards as an army. Presumably this means that she didn’t approve of the whole business, or, since these lovely ladies are the “Crystal Gems” she might have been on the another side of the war altogether...
“The shards have a powerful partial consciousness that has been harnessed by gems throughout history in order to create semi-sentient drone soldiers, with the capacity to follow basic orders”
Um Pearl, Pearl, all those shards look like they may have come from the same gem. If they’re semi-sentient as shards and intelligent enough to follow orders and develop beyond- beyond- oh-
