Definition:

PLC or also known as programmable logic control is a digital computer used in automation. PLC work real-time, that means they react immediately on the input they obtain. They are designed in such a way that they can withstand factory and industry pressure like tolerating noise and excessive vibration. Along with this a PLC program can take multiple inputs and can give multiple outputs at a time. Due to these reason from past few decades, usage of programmable logic control PLC has increased worldwide. 

Why PLC program invented?

"Necessity is mother of invention" same is the case with invention of programmable logic controls. PLC was invented in somewhere between 1960s in America. Its invention was to facilitate USA automobile industries. There it successfully replaced hard wire control panels. With this it was observed that PLC can reduce time consumption and associated cost. Thus this increased its popularity and later on it made its way in other parts of the world. 

History of PLC:

The first PLC was made by Bedford Associations of Bedford, Massachusetts in 1968. Dick Morley was the project manager who led this project successfully. Later on in 1977 due to its successful launch and usage, general electronics acquired modicum brand PLC. From there journey of the PLC continued to a German company AEG and then to French company Schneider Electric. 

Programming of PLC's:

Today PLC programs are much advanced as compare to the PLC programs used before and after 1980s. Earlier PLC programming was done with specially purposed propriety terminals. These panels contained dedicated operating keys. Today most of the PLC programming is done mostly with the help of software. Programming software is uploaded on personal computer and then they are connected to PLC via Ethernet cable. 

Uses of PLC:

- PLC provides system flexibility.

- It helps to reduce weight and cost of the overall project.

- It deals with overall automation processes.

- It is used to control machinery present in an industry.

So many of the many things we use and come in contact with in this world is brought to us thanks to the modern marvel of automation. The applications for PLCs are very broad and far reaching due to the highly programmable nature of the devices. What once took the PLC's predecessor, the Relay System, a complete lengthy shutdown to reprogram through extensive rewiring to accomplish, now can be done in a matter of minutes by simply changing some code in a computer program on a simple personal computer.

In order to fully understand what makes a GE Fanuc PLC different from your standard computer, it is important to understand a little bit of the history behind the PLC.  PLC stands for Programmable Logic Controller.  The first one ever created came from a company in Bedford, Massachusetts.  This unit was called the “084” and was the answer to a problem the automobile manufacturing industry had faced for quite some time.

Every year, when the new car models came out, the electricians at the auto plants had to manually rewire and reconnect every piece of machinery in the plant so the machines would work properly for the new car models.  The 084 allowed the company to program the machinery using the PLC platform with much less time and labor.  This early PLC operated from a program that ran from magnetic cassette tapes.  The year was 1968.

Durability

Because the GE Fanuc PLC platforms are designed to be operated by the industrial employees themselves and not a hired programmer or handler, the GE Fanuc PLC platform must be durable enough to withstand the operators use and, sometimes (although not recommended) abuse.  The GE Fanuc PLC platform is often employed in a manufacturing setting and must be able to stand up to years of use without fail.
