2015 Annual Gates Letter: A Big Bet and a Call for Global Citizens
On January 22nd, Bill and Melinda Gates released their 2015 Annual Letter. Their one big bet for the next 15 years: The lives of people in poor countries will improve faster in the next 15 years than at any other time in history. And their lives will improve more than anyone elseâs. Even if youâre not into geeking out on global development like I am, the Gates Letter is a great read. I am sharing the four main breakthroughs and call to action included in the letter, but this post only scratches the surface. I highly encourage you to take a few minutes to read through it. I promise you will learn something.

Globally, the percentage of very poor has dropped by more than 1/2 since 1990. Thatâs pretty incredible when you stop to think about it. Again, there are still one billion people living in extreme poverty globally. The Gates letter isnât written to tell us weâve made everything better, itâs just trying to point out the efforts being made are working. Hereâs another myth buster from the Gates letter. Did you know that only 1% of our Federal Budget is spent on Foreign Aid? One percent works out to around $11 Billion dollars, which by anyoneâs standards is a whole lot of money. But averaged out, itâs $30 per American. Would you willingly donate $30 a year to protect 120 kids from communicable diseases? Thatâs a question to ask when weâre talking budget cuts in this country.

I encourage you to take some time and read through the letter from Bill and Melinda Gates. While I pulled out some of the highlights, there is much more information included in the letter, and it may will open your eyes to several global issues. Itâs a great read. I find these words to be so incredibly powerful as it is indeed true. Mainstream media often doesnât highlight the successes we have made in making the world a better place. Instead, they oftentimes focus on the bad and also donât necessarily tell us the truth about what is really going on. For anyone with doubt that remarkable progress has been made and is continuing to be made around the world, then the Bill and Melinda Gates 2014 Letter is a for you. Bill and Melinda Gates eloquantly lay out the facts behind three major myths that are standing in the way of eliminating poverty.
