Stop Doing The Shit
By: Gary John Bishop
Ever feel like you are stuck in a cycle? As if no matter what life goal or definition of success you have hit, the feeling of accomplishment doesn't stick around too long before shit hits the fan? Bishop writes about the truths we have concluded during our new sponge age (adolescence and young adult life) about ourselves, others, and life and how those truths shape the way we seemingly always fuck ourselves over (self-sabotoge).
Why did I read a book about self-sabotage, you ask? I will answer you with this, who doesn't self-sabotage? I am on a journey to find out more about myself, to have a better understand of why I do things and how I can look in a different light so I can treat others (in particularly my significant other) with what they need without fucking it up. I'd say I'm off to a good start.
This book has brought light to some of my deepest demons - my saboteurs, or the conclusions (truths) about myself, others, and life.
Me: I am the way I am - stubborn, selfish, fat, mood-swings.
Others: People either care too much or don't care at all and overall predictable, it is better to be alone and avoid all that drama.
Life: It's pointless, we are all going to die anyways.
Great, I have identified my saboteurs, how do I fix them? Bishop gives a great answer, you don't. Whatever you resist persists. Peace comes when you let what is be and accept it without charge or reaction. This is where the term "authentic pivot" comes into play - it is your choice to fall back into those habits or to forge new beginnings - ever-evolving. Be that change you want.
I give this book at 5 out of 5. The way the words were written and the use of everyday acumen helped in how easily the book read. However, if you are an individual that does not like curse words, you might want to pick up another book. This book helped me tremendously and if you're on a self-discovery journey like I am, I hope it helps you out too.
