As the noon bells rang out across the city of Divinityâs Reach, an elderly couple made their way slowly through the winding streets of the Salma District. Both husband and wife were wrinkled and tanned, pushing close to their eighth decade each. Covered in vibrantly colored, hooded robes, the pair each placed their weight on sturdy staves that clicked each time they struck the cobbled stones leading up to the LaCoria Manor. Stepping forward, the man knocked on the door and waited patiently.
It was a short wait before the door was opened by the salt and peppered hair Steward of the manor. Sharp brown eyes studied the pair before him, quickly recognizing the couple who he had not seen in nearly fifteen years. âMaster Thindrid!â
âAndrew, my old friend,â grinning, Albert stepped forward and embraced the stunned soldier. Even in their advancing years, both men still stood straight, though Albertâs groomed beard was much longer and completely silver now. âI understand that Alexandria was injured quite some time ago. Silly child is always getting injured, but Melinda and I thought we would come pay her a visit this time.â
âMelinda?â Andrew looked around; his eyes narrowing as he barely caught the barest hint of light being distorted at the base of the three steps leading to the door. A womanâs raspy laugh could be heard as the distortion shimmered and dissolved, revealing a thin elderly woman with long silver hair in a very bright green and orange robe. âYouâre losing your touch my lady.â
âIâm seventy-eight years old child,â wheezing as she mounted the stairs, she gave the Steward a hug as well. âWhen you get to my age, even you wonât be able to slip about as you once did. Could we bother you for some tea while we visit Alexandria?â
âOf course, honored guest are afforded every courtesy,â offering his arm to Melinda, he guided the couple to the main room. A wide, rare smile was on his face as he saw the couple seated before heading up the stairs to the door of Alexandriaâs room. In his usual fashion, he knocked sharply and loudly three times before calling out. âAlexandria, you have guests waiting downstairs for you.â
As usual, there was a pause followed by the drop of feet onto the wooden floors. Listening, he could hear shuffling inside, the steps growing louder until Alexandria appeared at the door with a smile. Fully aware of her habits in her room, he was a little surprised to find her fully dressed already. âI wasnât expecting anyone today, who is it?â
âMaster and Lady Thindrid,â hiding his grin, he bowed his head.
âMaster Albert is here!?â Reaching inside, she grabbed her walking stick and hurried towards the stairs. Moving as quickly as she dared, it was still a slow process to negotiate each step while taking care not to push her legs too hard, too fast. She could hear Andrew following behind, ready to catch her if needed until she reached the bottom, scurrying to the main room where her old master and his wife sat. âMaster Thindrid!â
With a hearty chuckle, the old man rose, embracing the tiny woman who hurried to him for a hug. Their embrace lasted until he began to cough from the crushing embrace he was receiving. âHello there my pupil, have you been keeping up with your studies? Has the Priory been treating you well?â
âOf course,â she said proudly, stepping back and leaning over to give Melinda a hug as well. âYou always told me, never let a day go by without learning at least one new thing. And the Priory has been very good to me, theyâre pretty understanding about my injuries, though this one was outside of work and outside their skills. But I had a good group of friends that took really good care of me.â
âExcellent,â catching his breath, he took his seat next to his wife as Alexandria took the once across from them, âabsolutely wonderful. I happened upon the reports of your injuries while we were in the Grove. Iâm sorry to hear about your loss.â
âThank you,â smoothing out her skirts, there was a bright smile on her face as she took in the faces of the man who had taught her all the basics of magic, and the woman who had cooked her meals for three years. âSo you two came all the way out here, just to check up on me?â
âWe were worried about you Alexandria,â Melinda chimed in, âyouâve always been injury prone and we wanted to make sure you were recovering.â
âI also wanted to speak with you about your most recent report. Thatâs quite the interesting theory you have my pupil.â Sitting up more straightly, Albertâs blue eyes focused on Alexandria.
âIn my defense, I had quite the teacher. If it wasnât for you, Iâd never look past the basics of magic or find correlations between varying magic.â Laughing, Alexandria smiled as Andrew brought in tea for the couple. âHow many teachers teach their students that magic isnât just magic? Teach them about the different forms of magical energy; chaos, dragon, light, dark, so on?â
âYou always did enjoy the more complex subjects,â sipping at his tea, he grinned. âSo then Magister, letâs discuss your current theoryâŠâ
