Good to see some Garden Warblers today. Despite the name they are found in woodland edges, thickets, and denser hedgerows, favouring area of dense bush AND trees. They occur in similar habitats to the Blackcap, although the Blackcap also occurs in more open habitat, woodland with a sparser shrub layer, parks, and even shrubby margins of gardens (including mine!). The Blackcap arrives first, typically around the start of April, and the male, with the black cap, often sings from the top of bushes and trees, with a sweet chattering warble that is a bit like a speeded up Blackbird! The Garden Warbler arrives from mid April, or later, when there is more cover, and it prefers to sing from cover. Combined with the general brown colouration, it can be difficult to spot as a bird that 'skulks' more. The song is very similar to the Blackcap, although an experienced birder can recognise the song that is more melodious and continues for longer (the Blackcap sings then ... stops ..... sings .... then stops.). But it is quite a challenge if you hear a bird that sounds like a Blackcap or Garden Warbler. If you end up spotting the bird, it is probably going to be the Blackcap. If you have no luck spotting the bird and it sounds more melodious, there is a good chance it is a Garden Warbler. But you never know for sure since you don't see it! It also means birders get quite excited at seeing this 'brown job', but a 'brown job' with a lovely melodius song!
