Game of Arms finale!!! #gameofarms #armwrestling #buff #girl
Homegrown and Humble
Remember being younger and challenging friends your strength by a good ol’ game of arm wrestling? Guess what, it’s no longer a game of the past. I caught up with local champ, Ethan Fritsche, one of five members of Kansas City’s Rolling Thunder. The past few weeks, you might have seen or heard of the show Game of Arms on AMC. Ethan is truly making a name for himself along with bragging rights.
When did you start competing in arm wrestling? Â
‘I first got started arm wrestling when I was about six years old. I was encouraged by my father who is a World Champion himself and a great promoter in the arm wrestling community.’
What do you do to physically and mentally to prepare for a competition?Â
‘Before I get ready for a match there are many things that I do both mentally and physically to prepare. About a week out I begin to go to a different place in my mind and tuning things out that usually distract me. Physically I begin stretching more intensely than I regularly do to prepare my arms for what is to come.’
What goes through your mind when face to face with your opponent?Â
‘When my arm is planted on the table and my opponent is in front of me all I can think about is my strategy that I’m bringing in and how best to block or stop his and listening intently for the ready go.’
Who’s your biggest idol?                                                                       Â
‘Since I was a young boy I have had many idols that have inspired my journey. My greatest would have to be my father. Growing up I got to witness my dad own his own business and run things the way he saw it and on top of it all he was a World Champion arm wrestler. Despite all of his great accomplishments and power he still remained humble! This act of a loving heart and soul of a lion I envy of my father and try to abide by it with all of my heart. Next would have to be Bruce Lee because I respect his speed and raw skill. (Be like water).’
What advice would you give to someone that would be interested in getting into the arm wrestling competition? 'Some advice I would like to give to any up and coming arm wrestlers is to expect it to be hard, if you want to see any gains you have to eat pain. Also find someone locally who has been around the sport for some time and who can give you pointers.'
Whats the future hold for your arm wrestling career? 'The future in the arm wrestling world is growing and gaining popularity everyday. I think this means great things for me because I feel that I am a part of arm wrestling since I was born in to it and hope to grow and develop with the sport.'
After hearing Ethan’s story, it was obvious that the message ‘know your roots’ speaks loud and clear.
