Three weeks ago, a parliamentary inquiry into gambling was taking evidence. I submitted 27-pages of scientific evidence on the gambling crisis. It was rejected. Reason unknown. So I hastily wrote a short summary and it has now been published! A lack of evidence from medics is particularly worrying but nothing new of course. It was only in 2019 that the NHS Long Term plan mentioned gambling for the first time. In the form of three sentences! Just three sentences. (They weren't SMART sentences) There is plenty of evidence that demonstrates gambling harm has serious and significant health impacts. It's estimated that gambling harm accounts for 7.1% of all loss of healthy life in UK. Approximately, 30% of suicides in 20-50 year olds is due to gambling addiction (often undiagnosed). Yet, there are 0 NICE guidelines & 0 Quality Standards for health care professionals to refer to.
