long answer: ppl have this weird tendency to avoid using the word black even when its the only way to describe a movie like moonlight. moonlight’s cast is all black. its crew is predominantly black. the movie portrays black settings and talks about a uniquely black experience; it is a coming of age story about a gay black boy.  moreover, using the word “poc” to describe moonlight robs black ppl, gay black ppl especially, of the experience of seeing themselves represented in a film. other groups, including non-black poc, tend to throw sga black ppl under the bus by assuming us to be more homophobic than other groups. ppl like to act like being black and lgbt are mutually exclusive experiences. and in general, black ppl aren’t allowed to be soft, to be vulnerable, to be in love, to have warm feelings for another. moonlight took all these tendencies and turned them on their heads. it is a victory for black people, and a testament to black creativity. it is a reminder that our stories can and should be heard. so please, for the love of god, don’t call it a poc movie.
