SLOW CREEP [2017]
gahm – “around your waist”
beauty and magic in just 66 seconds? no problem.
travis mckenzie aka gahm is brought to you courtesy of my ongoing obsession with all things awful records – a suitably healthy and positive obsession, i hasten to add – borne of a sheer appreciation of original craft, smart musicianship, prowling prowess, a fearless attitude, perfect poise, and the power and love of the collective. after all, the concept of people working and growing together, supporting and looking out for each other is something to be richly celebrated in music and indeed life.
gahm produces some damned intriguing music, laying down his own song and spoken word over what might be termed somewhat ‘unorthodox’ beats and instrumentation. it ranges from comforting to disconcerting, from homespun and humble to expansive and cinematic, but throughout it feels ever-challenging, reaching, striving, restless, innovative and gorgeously eccentric. he’s constantly pushing the envelope of more ‘traditional’ hip-hop tropes, and it makes for an enticingly exciting and eclectic listen every time.
“around your waist” is no exception, and encapsulates much of what there is to love about gahm in little over a minute. it’s heartfelt and well-meaning, wonderfully crafted and lush in instrumentation, and it boasts a tender and immersive quality that succeeds in briskly wrapping you up in the most generous of hugs (around your waist, no doubt), making you smile, and touching your soul. it slip-and-slides along so effortlessly, the bass is lilting and reassuring, the kick rhythmic and tight, the claps crisp and uplifting, while the intricately plucked guitar adds a calming neatness and finesse. as for mckenzie’s voice, it’s smooth and soothing throughout, and knocking it further back in the mix encourages you to listen evermore keenly to its charming and dulcet tones – even if you can’t quite pick out each and every word, it seems safe to infer only goodness from his irresistible intonation. this is matched by the generosity of the exquisite chord progression that forms the middle refrain: it's so simple yet so enchanting and inspiring, even in muffled form, as its final two-bar reprise so joyously proves. “around your waist” is a deft delight that leaves you bathed in a resplendent glow of loveliness, so if you’re ever in need of a quick, hug-like pick-me-up, then here’s the place to turn.
in closing, i acknowledge that a mere 66 seconds might not be sufficient for you to get as much out of gahm as you might wish (no matter how brilliant those 66 seconds), so for those who’d like extra, i’ve included a little more of his work below. first up, there’s “sun in your eyes”, a lovelorn duet with the endearingly breathy cherele, taken from his 2015 album, godawfulhatemachine; then there’s his growling and enthusiastic “recall (eat it girl)” from earlier this year; finally, there’s the utterly outlandish yet sublime gahm overhaul of sixpence none the richer’s “kiss me” in the form of his “iwannadiemix”, which takes this modern twee-some classic onto whole new levels of shimmering awesomeness. hopefully that’s more than enough fabulousness to be getting on with for now, people. enjoy!
