Gevelsteen · Gable stones
During our visit to Amsterdam we were attracted by these colorfully painted stone tablets on the walls of some buildings. The gable stones served as identification for the buildings before house numbers came into use. This was quite convenient in the 16th century, as most of the suppliers couldn’t read. There is an estimated number of 800 of these plates left in Amsterdam. Enjoy some examples of our little photo collection
