Jero had stayed to help clean up, clearly taking his new role as interim leader to heart.
āItās the example it sets, I need to do things right now.ā He was saying to Idrina in the conservatory.
āAre you now?ā Rin teased, getting closer to him.
āThis isnāt going to end wellā Isidora said to Nellie.
The blond nodded, turning away.
āUntil now, she kept busy. First revenge, then on the renovation. Now she has nothing left to think of and⦠Jero is a nice target for her wandering mind.ā A pause. āSince heās always had the biggest crush on her.ā
Isi turned to her, a smile blooming. āSay more.ā
She grabbed the coffee sheād been offered as a thanks for helping to tidy up and let Nellie decide how much gossiping she was going to do.
āI canāt really say any more. Nowadays, I never know if my insights on people are coming from my degree or from the prey in me overthinking things.ā
Isi tried to remember the times sheād seen them interact. How he always seemed keen to give Rin everything she asked for, as quickly as possible. But then, he was like that with everyone.
She hopped down her perch. āI think you can trust yourself on that one.ā
Nellie nodded, deep in thought.
Then: āRin and I will finish to clean up ourselves, thanks for your help.ā
āNo problem! Let me just go say goodbye!ā Isi smiled, heading to where her sister was still tormenting Jero.
āDonāt lie, you know you like the idea. We could go up to my bedroom just now.ā Her voice was a murmur.
In a quick movement to straighten up, Rin lost her balance. She ended up on the ground, giggling to herself. Jero looked away.
āYour merās showing.ā Isidora let herself comment, her sister glaring at her. āAnyway, weāre off home, then leaving early in the morning. Donāt do anything I wouldnāt do.ā
As they left, Isi heard Rin grunt to her housemate: āIām not doing anything she wouldnāt anyway, this is straight out of š©š¦š³ playbook.ā
Nellie hummed. āWhich is maybe why itās concerning to her?ā
Rory just sighed, walking away from it all: āSo glad I donāt have to be here to untangle šµš©š¢šµ messā¦ā
Once home, Isi taking her makeup off and Rory fixing the bathtub for the fifth time that month, Isi took her phone off silent. Hopefully, her mother was done trying to call for the day, now that night had fallen.
But, of course, she was proven wrong when her phone started vibrating again.
Isidora let it go to voicemail.
āAre you going to answer that?ā Rory asked, looking at her in the mirror.
āNo. My mumās trying to get us to visit, so she can convince us to adopt a child sheās heard of from a colleague.ā
āAdop-ā
āYeah. She gets these ideas sometimes⦠Just gotta ignore her for bit.ā
āAre you okay?ā Rory asked, her voice gentle, knowing the subject couldnāt be easy for her.
Isi just shrugged.
āSort of. She sent me pictures.ā
āWell thatās fucked.ā
āI guess.ā She took a breath, trying not to think about it too much. āIāve not been able to stop looking at that kid though.ā
They changed into their pyjamas and settled on the bed, the silence between them heavyā¦
āI want you to be a mother so badlyā¦ā Isidora whispered.
āWeāll get there.ā Rory promised. āIām sure the stars would agree.ā
A minute later, they were next to their new telescope, courtesy of Wolfgang.
āWell? Whatās the verdict?ā Rory joked after a few minutes of Isidora watching the stars in silence.
āI see nothing related to kids⦠But thereās something about unplanned meetings coming to us soon?ā
Rory let out a deep sigh. āI donāt think I should ever make plans anymore, they š¢ššøš¢šŗš“ change.ā
They both let out a small laugh, recognising how chaotic their lives had been.
āWhatās your mantra again?ā Isi asked, turning away from the telescope. āExpect chaos-ā
But she was cut off by Roryās lips on hers.
They would simply never get enough of each other, would they?
Later that night, back in their bed, Isi watched as Rory slowly fell asleep.
āThanks for not making a big deal out of todayā The alpha whispered as she closed her eyes.
āI still do have one thing for you. You can have it tomorrow morning so that it doesnāt count as a birthday present.ā
Rory grunted.
Isiās heart squeezed at the idea of many more years like this, trying to be respectful of Roryās disdain for her birthday, while still making her feel special and appreciatedā¦
And the next morning, the last bit of Isiās plan had arrived.
āWhy does it smell like petrol?!ā
āYou know the building wonāt survive another fire, dove!ā Rory protested, her eyes still covered.
Isi couldnāt hold the laugh in. āDonāt worry, the house will be fine. Remember that dream we shared a while ago, with the bike?ā
Rory went completely still. āYou did NOT.ā
Isi lifted her hand, letting her partner take in the gift in front of them.
āI did.ā
For a little longer than expected, Rory didnāt breathe.
Then, when she finally did, she ran her hands onto every single part of the motorbike. Mounted it immediately, looking back at Isi with a smirk:
āI hope you know youāre now my second favourite thing in the world. This š£š¦š¢š“šµ has taken the crown.ā
āI was never one for crowns!ā Isi laughed.
āAnd just in time for our road trip, too!ā Rory sounded like a child on Winterfest morning.
She pulled Isidora into a side hug, while still checking every piece of metal and gear.
āReady, darling? Say goodbye to Moonwood for now, weāve got some sights to see.ā
āLetās do it.ā
