IGP and police selective and prejudiced, claims Hindraf

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18, 2015: Hindraf is frustrated that the police have not acted on the several police reports made by the father of 14-year-old G. Thiyagguru on the attempted suicide by his son for fear of being held by Islamic religious authorities by force.

Thiyagguru’s father has made several police reports alleging kidnapping and the forced conversion of son who was traumatised and led him to attempt suicide.

“We fail to see why the police has not initiated any investigation nor taken any statement from the minor who might lose his life or his father over the forceful detention by the Religious Department based on the instruction of two national school teachers while the boy was still in the school.

“To date we have information that none of the teachers or officials of the relevant Islamic authorities involved in the forceful detention have even been questioned or taken into custody bearing the seriousness of the offence against a minor,” said Hindraf chairman P. Waytha Moorthy.

“Is the police waiting for the boy to lose his life first before initiating a sham investigation? It looks obvious the police are deliberately not willing to obtain a dying declaration from the boy.

“This inaction by the police is clear evidence that the police is institutionally racist and condoning religious extremism,” he said.

“The conduct of the teachers who were in cohorts with the Negri Sembilan religious authority and their action of placing the child under false imprisonment to force him to convert to Islam without the permission of the father is nothing short of kidnapping which is a serious offence that warrants an immediate arrest and remand.

“Although the constitution provides for equality in law under Article 8, it appears that the police inaction is deliberate and appears to be condoning these religious extreme zealots.

“We strongly call up the Home Minister to intervene immediately to act as the Inspector-General of Police and the police is selective and prejudiced racially in exercising their executive power under the constitution.
