The Market Part 2Â
Part 1
You coughed loudly as you nervously rolled your chef sleeves up. âfancy seeing you hereâ you let out a nervous chuckle as you ran a hand through your hair.Â
âWell you recommended this placeâŚ.i had some time and...do you work here?â Lin was confused but a part of her felt upset. You were hiding a part of yourself from her. Was it because you felt discouraged to let her know that you were what⌠a cook? She isnât that intimidating that you felt the need to hide. Now Lin was feeling even more upset.Â
You pulled a rag from your back pocket and wiped down the counter of the bar, thinking of what to say. Lin eyed you suspiciously then voiced again ây/nâŚ.do you work here?â
You suck in a breath and wincing a bit âin a sense, yeahâ
âWhy didnât you tell me? I donât judge if youâre a cook hereâ Lin looks around and notices the now almost empty restaurant with a couple of teens in the back corner enjoying their meal.
This time you let out a laugh âIâm more than a cook, Linâ setting the rag over your shoulder as you fold your arms. âIâm sorry during our hangouts I didnât discuss my job. Itâs one of the things I like to keep private.â you look around before standing across from Lin as you motion for her to sit down at one of the stools.Â
âI understand wanting to keep things private.â Lin relents and takes a seat. She looks around the place and notices a few things she found familiar then looks back at you. âWas this place a soup shop before? I think Iâve been here...Uh an elderly coupleâ
You nodded and smiled fondly as you answered for Lin âyes, Mr. and Mrs. Gaung. Sweetest folks you could ever meet. They retired a couple years back.â walking towards the kitchen to get a tea set as you carried out the conversation âI bought the place from them some things have changed from renovating. Though there are a couple of things that I still kept from them, a gift and also a bit of history on the placeâ walking back setting the tray in front of Lin, pouring both you and her a cup of oolong tea with jasmine. Sliding a cup towards Lin while she looked around and noticed the painting âyeah, I recognized that painting.â
âMrs. Guang painted it and didnât really feel like it should leave itâs home.â you brought your cup up and inhaled deeply the smell of the tea before taking a sip. âI quite like the painting and frankly I agree with her. Who am I to remove a painting from itâs home?âÂ
âThatâs an interesting take on a paintingâ Lin scoffs and takes a sip of her tea then looks down ânot bad...oolong?â she looks up at you and you nod. âYeah Oolong with a bit of Jasmine, itâs a bit of a blend of mine. Get them on the mountainsides of the earth kingdom.â you cashed out the group of teens and watched them walk out the restaurant before flipping the sign to closed.
âButâŚ.i bet youâre not here for some tea, Chief Beifongâ you smirked as you fold your arms âwhat are you in the mood for? Name the dish and Iâll get the skillet readyâ
Lin huffs as she shakes her head in disbelief âbut you just closed the shopâ
âItâs late and itâs fine. Itâs just you and me now Beifong. So name the dishâ you egged her on as she takes another sip of the tea âany dish?â her brow raises as she eyes you up and down. Looking at your smirk as she is trying to decide to test your cooking skills. She just now realized she has never tried your cooking. This will surely be quite the event as she thinks about what to ask for. She remembered something you mentioned the first time she met you and came to a solution.Â
âI want to try your ginger garlic salmon.â she smirked as she noticed your eyes widened a bit but you quickly regained your composure. âHmm, I knew you were listening to my conversation that dayâ
âWasnât the only thing I was doingâ Lin muttered behind her cup as she took another sip of the tea.Â
âWhat was that?â you called out as you looked at her and Lin shrugged. Looking back at the kitchen then back at Lin, debating whether or not to take the challenge. You smirked looking down as you took your rag and put it back in your back pocket, âyouâre on Beifongâ.Â
âFeel free to anything at the barâ you voiced out to the chief of police while you walked to your station and got your bandana. Getting the black cloth you walk over to the sink and tie it around your head then wash your hands and arms thoroughly.
While you started prepping the dish Lin looked around and found a bottle of a special blend of fire plum wine âhow did you get this?â she observed the bottle then looked over at you. âWhat?â you voiced out as you wiped your hands onto a dish towel while stepping out to the dining area.Â
âThis blendâŚit's been a while since they bottled it for shippingâ Lin turns to look at you as you lean against the counter. You smile as you cross your arms across your chest while you look down reminiscing âYeah, itâs specially imported from the Fire Nation. I got it during my travels while looking for new cuisines.â standing up then walks over beside Lin as you reach your hand out asking for the bottle. âItâs a rare wine. They only harvest the fruits during a special windowâ Lin remarks and you nod as you uncork the bottle and pour both of you a glass, âyou know your spiritsâ you smile warmly at the older woman before handing her the glass. âWell when youâre bored at galas and special events that require a chief of police attendance. The label on the bottle can help entertain youâ Lin dryly remarks as she looks at the other bottles on the shelf. You walk up and hand her a glass and Lin quickly shakes her head âwhat are you doing. We canât drink thatâ she looks as if you committed a crime. You chuckle lightly and look at her confused âwhy not? Isnât that itâs purpose? Itâs actually really tasteful, Chiefâ you smile as you swirl your glass around before taking a sip. âDoes rare blend mean anything to you? Donât you save it for a special occasion or something worthy to drink to?â Lin exasperates which causes you to laugh softly. âYes, itâs rare but whatâs the point of getting it if youâre not going to enjoy it? Especially since you came all this way for some ginger honey salmonâ a smile appearing on your lips as you take another sip. Lin huffs at you as she rolls her eyes âand how is that dish anyways? Did you forget or is it a burnt crispâÂ
In the time of the talk you almost forgot you were making the chief dinner and set the glass quickly on the counter, muttering a âshitâ under your breath. âNo, i didnât forgetâ yell out as you rush to the kitchen. Grabbing the oven mits as you pull the fish out of the broiler. Thereâs some parts that are blacken but easily removable. You start setting the food on the cart and wheel it out to the tables.Â
âDinner is servedâ you smile proudly then show Lin to a table. As she takes a seat she looks up at you waiting for you, nodding her head to the chair across from her âAre you not going to sit down?â
A slight pink rose to your cheeks as you try to respond. âI-â
âI meanâŚit's so much for just me and Itâs weird being the only one eating. â Lin stammers causing you to smile softly âsure, Iâll join youâ
âGoodâ Lin looks at you and gives you a soft smile then you slide into the chair and return the smileÂ
âDig in.â
