Just had this thought but I hc that when Kya was traveling the world she had a pet messenger hawk. That’s how she was able to send letters to her friends and family. It reminded Kya of the tales of Hawky from her Uncle Sokka.
I also HC that Sokka and Zuko taught Kya all about how to take care of her hawk.
I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this on Tumblr or I did but didn’t go into detail. but I head canon Kya as a pipa player. She plays other instruments of course, but she likes the pipa mainly because of Uncle Iroh.
Uncle Iroh would play nursery songs to the Gaang kids. Bumi ll and Kya loved it the most, it would be the first thing they would request when visiting the IFre Nation.
When Kya grew up a bit he taught her how to play. As a gift, he gave her his pipa. As it accompanied him in his travels with her Uncle Zuko. Kya treasures that pipa very much. She still has it to this day in her office.
Now she uses the pipa to play nursery rhymes and nomadic songs to her niblings. Sometimes when she’s at the hospital or at a refugee medical camp. Some of her patients are children and she’ll play them songs to calm them down and gain their trust. Even tho it’s not that hard. Kya is a very trusting person.
She also plays it for Lin because it reminds her of Uncle Iroh too. Kya and Lin learned Pai Sho from him. Lin listens to Kya play out on the terrace and it calms her down when she’s had a particular hard day at work. Also it can soothe her to sleep.
