Heyyy guys.

Now, before you go all “where-you-been” on me, I just want to say straight-up that I went to Edinburgh. So, to preempt your question, I was travelling. Sorrynotsorry (although a little sorry because I did try post while I was there but yeah I got 3/4 of the way through writing and lost it all because my laptop died, so I was too irritated to start again but kind of wish I did).

How have you been? I feel like this is very one-way communication, y’know? And yeah, I guess that’s what a blog kind of is anyway, but I still would love to hear what you come to realise at the end of your week. Drop me an ask.

I’ve been pretty friggin great, I won’t lie. I got the chance in July (if you remember) to go to Scotland and two weeks ago that materialised. I won’t go into all the details here because that’ll take up far too much space - I could really just keep going, no jokes - but you can follow this link to a review I wrote if you want to read it.

Basically, however, it was a media conference where 75-odd delegates were flown from 19 countries to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. For 3 days, we were given the opportunity to interact with the biggest names in journalism, such as heads of BBC, CNN, STV, Reuters, Buzzfeed... I mean, the list goes on. University lecturers were there too, so in terms of networking I really got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. All of these influential media figures in one place at the same time. Damn.

Then, just getting to meet students my age from Brazil to the Dominican Republic to Russia to Mauritius to China to Egypt... It was so eye-opening, and making new friends with nationalities I might not meet otherwise was so amazing. I will never forget it. Ever. 

The only regret, I guess, is not getting to see more of Edinburgh. Our time at parliament was a very fixed schedule and unfortunately I only got out in the evenings - which, to be honest, gave me some quality time with the beautiful people I was sharing the experience with. Still, I managed to get to the top of Arthur’s Seat on my final evening, and wave goodbye to the whole of Edinburgh in one go. Incredible view, and even better company. I’m so glad I took the opportunity to go. It’s really important I do that more often.

Anyway, coming back home was really nice, really sad, and really stressful. University had started already and I was missing the whole first week, so even though I got a few days more at home, I had to set my schedule up so that I could hit the ground running when I got back that weekend.

Needless to say, I tried to make the most of every second I had back home. This term will be tough, and I’m going back on Wednesday for the weekend as I have a wedding to attend. Chris and Candice’s actually! I’m so excited. I really am. They deserve so much more than one day of being appreciated, but I’ll make sure they know how special they are, to me and to everyone else. But it meant that I wasn’t so sad to leave because I knew I’d be back quite soon. I guess I’m worried about how I’ll feel after Edinburgh has worn-off, and after it sinks in that I’m not coming home until December.

It’ll be fine. I have such great friends here now. They really spend too much time on me, and I don’t deserve it, but I still really appreciate it. You know, I was actually a little bit excited to come back to Grahamstown, because I actually had something that I missed? It’s a huge step in the right direction. I’m over the moon about it.

Lastly, my lesson from all of this (quite broad, haha): we have more time than we sometimes think we do, and we shouldn’t spend it thinking about what to do with it. Just do it. Just use it on the things and the people that you love and that will keep you sane. That’s not time wasted. I promise. Go out for an hour, take a walk, spend 20 minutes reading that dusty book that’s been sitting on your shelf since your New Year’s resolutions... You need it. I need it. We need it.
